STF to shut down by Jan. 1st, 2014

Postby EdT. on Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:29 pm

It's been a hell of a trip, but it's time to let someone else have a go at it. I no longer have the time nor energy to operate this forum in the manner in which it should be maintained. I have not arrived at this decision lightly and it is final.

I will keep everything as-is until such time as a new forum can be started up and everyone moved over. But this must be done no later than the end of this year. After it's all done I will keep this forum up indefinitely as an archive of sorts.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed and to everyone who has worked to keep the doors open this long.

Ed T.

Hi Ed,

In the short time I have been associated with STF I have learned quite a bit about old signals, signs, other items and people associated with this site. Really hate to see you are throwing in the towel but understand the rigors of maintaining a site year after year. I have been adding Chevy info to my portion of a collective server for over a decade and on occasion I take a break. STF has been a nice break with the opportunity to check out other ideas and interests.

My Hat is off :hello: for what you have done.

Cheers!

No one can blame you, it's pretty time-consuming. Thanks for all of the work you, the mods, and everyone else have put into this forum to make it and keep it an enjoyable place to share pictures, videos, and talk about all sorts of signal and non-signal things. I don't know how or where the current server is hosted, but how realistic is the idea of just giving another user access to all of the back-end files and settings while keeping the server where it is, or on a remote paid host? There's got to be other people who would be able to slide in and keep things sailing.

Thanks for all that you've done, Ed.

Hopefully someone has the ability to start STF II...

STF will remain on the air as an archive/resource of sorts, but will cease to function as an active forum. Whatever iteration of the club is to come next will be on new servers with new software, new management and fresh new ideas. A clean start.

There are several members who have the technical know-how to start up a new forum. It's not rocket-surgery  . But there's much, much more to it than just the nuts and bolts of the website. :this: But that's going to be up to you guys to decide. I think the club will benefit from having some new leaders with fresh new ideas and the time and energy to see them through to fruition.

It is a sad day in the neighborhood, but thank you so, so much EdT. for all you have done to bring a piece of escapism into our lives. I truly value the diversity of this group.

You and Signalfan have helped bring this gang of fringe collectors together which span the entire United States and beyond. Also, as has been mentioned, many thanks to the moderators too. This place has helped identify the regional originality and peculiarity in many corners of small cities and large metropolises alike.

We have all gained through knowledge and friendships which I pray will last. To anyone who may be inclined to pick up the baton, I thank you as well. Please let the group know how we, as a community, may be of assistance. I am not a tech guy, but my son is.

Again thank you for a job well done, EdT. You are a true gentleman, and in this day, a rare breed. All the best to you, your family, and your endeavors.

This is October 1st, not April 1st. Please tell me this is a late April Fools joke. :beg:

Can't say I blame you Ed for deciding to move onto other ventures. While I imagined someday that STF would either shut its doors or change hands, its still somewhat of a shock to see it go.

I've been part of this community for over 10 years now. Back when I started, I was the "kid" in the group with a genuine interest in traffic lights. During this time I seen other people join in after me, young and old. Through this time I've aggressively expanded what was once a two-signal collection with flasher buttons in the light sockets, learned and shared information, and most of all gained a group of friends I never could've imagined had the same crazy interest in traffic lights as I did. I have also had the pleasure to meet most of you all in person at various meets, several OSMs, and DSMs, local meets and even a few one-on-one meetups/hangouts. Looking forward to the Palooza to meet and hang out with even more people

I can only hope that this doesn't mark an end to the community. I know we have a few facebook groups that are pretty active with people both on and off STF. Maybe this could be a reason to join in on facebook even for only using the signal groups. Or maybe someone could take over the technicial end of this forum so that it isn't lost to history.

Hopefully everything works out...its been quite the "ride"... just ask Fred  :Wink2:
