DT Restoration

Postby 3Mfanatic on Sun Dec 02, 2012 10:29 pm

Hey all...

For the last two weeks or so I've been slowly disassembling my Crouse-Hinds DT in preparation for its full restoration. We're talking all new hardware, gaskets, wiring, and visors many of the reproductions of which are courtesy of some of the great members here at STF who offer such services. :hello:

Here is where I left off last Sunday until I could procure a propane torch to fight off the remaining screws and latches that were stubbornly refusing to vacate the premises.

But with some heat, penetrating fluid and some creativity, I won out in the end and here is where we sit right now.

The hardware and related screws are in some eight plastic bags marked with their purpose so nothing goes missing and I now need to locate replacement screws for the visors, lens tabs, reflector hinges, reflectors and their locking plates...pretty much everything.

Watch this space for exciting updates! :good:

Does anybody have a cheat sheet for replacement screw sizes? I've been measuring and converting fractions of inches into decimals with these tiny screws and can't understand McMaster-Carr's website to save my life. I can't help but wonder if this might be easier if the USA didn't stick with this arcane and nonsensical system. :Phil:

Probably doesn't help that it's 2 AM and I really should be in bed so that's what I'm going to do.

Actually on that list the lens tabs and visors should be fillister also called cheese head.

I can send you all the correct screws you need.

What is wrong with the reflectors?

Thanks, Jay. Just out of curiosity but are the screws new?

I'm going for a no-compromises, to-the-T level restoration with a fanatical attention to detail here. Oh and for those curious, I met with the powdercoater and came to as close a match as possible to the original dark green, RAL 6009, also known as Fir Green. It will be ordered through Prismatic Powders and I'm hoping to have the signal colored by next weekend.

Well the house is now free of the DT and I won't get it back until the media blaster talks to the powdercoater to see what kind of prep they need for their finish. I still doubt this will get finished before the new year but man, it's going to be so worth the wait!
