Got a new toy - Canadien GE Ped

Postby joe_347v on Sun Apr 24, 2011 10:57 pm

After some searching around I've recently found one of those 12" Canadian Peds that I said I was looking for in my introduction to this group at a antique store, it' s a older Canadian GE ped that's getting harder to find on the streets now.

It's has a really bent up visor on the bottom section as well as being filthy inside and some of the paint on the walk lens has faded too. I've already started to fix the signal up and I'll post an newer pic when I'm done fixing it up, not sure if I'm going to paint it though.

Nice Score!!

Which logo does it have? I've seen many on the street which I assume are newer and have the GE logo and simply say "CGE". I got one of these PEDs last summer which had the GE logo but says "Canadian General Electric"

Somewhere in here is a thread about my restoration. I will try and find it tomorrow when I am not so tired.

Any thoughts on colour?

Thanks everyone, not sure what happened to it but I did find a blue incandescent lamp inside the walk section
Maybe they took it to a party and it got trashed

Mine has the GE logo and say "Made in Canada" underneath, I've also seen a lot in Toronto that have a GE logo with CGE underneath too. I don't know if this applies for signals but I was told by a fellow lighting enthusiast that GE used the CGE logo during the late '70s to late '80s and the GE "Made in Canada" logo was used before the late '70s.

I'm interested to see how you restored you GE ped and would appreciate it if you posted a link to your thread. Not sure on colour though, I might just keep it as is since it reminds of the GEs that were once common in my childhood.

Nice score  I'd like to eventually find a Canadian signal one day, either a pedestrian signal with with the Canadian Hand/Man or a gray back vehicle signal.

Thanks, I believe GE sold off their signals division to Fortran but I'm not sure on any dates or any more details.

I did some more work on the signal today and here's a updated pic:

I've somewhat straightened up the bottom visor and cleaned up the signal. I also touched up the walk lens, fixed the wiring to the sockets and stuck a couple of bulbs inside too. The visors still needs some more work and a new coat of paint inside though, still not sure if I'm going to paint the body.

Great Grab. I've seen lots of those lately, but mostly replaced with LED than incandescent. I'd like to get something like that too. :Wink2:

There are a bunch in Toronto, but are replaced with LED. also in Alliston and Elmvale, which both are still fully incandescent. Plus if your thinking of painting it, try to make the bottom door a bit more yellow, it looks like it's getting darker under the walk signal.
