Philadelphia visit

Postby TacomaJoe on Thu Oct 17, 2013 9:41 pm

I'm going to be in Philadelphia next week and may have some time to see some signals. Sounds like there's a bell with a crack in it that is on everyone's list. I'm just as interested in things red-yellow-green. Sadly a little late for all the other fun in Philly.

Have fun! I did two years of schooling out there and though the school was in the western 'burbs, I would often catch the R5 out of Malvern or Paoli into Center City on Saturdays for a few hours of mucking around. Wish I'd known more about signals and taken some pictures at that time.

Check out the Franklin Insatute, there's an enormous steam engine (train) in the basement
Reading terminal has great pastrami sandwiches
There's a really cool toy museum I happened upon one time in the city

Franklin Institute and Reading Terminal Market are a MUST!! There's a bunch of Marb/LFE/HCS signals around the Franklin, just turn around when you no longer feel safe!! If you're in center city at the market on a weekend throw a post up here or on H.D, I'll try and bring a Septa train down!!

For me it would be the Independence Seaport Museum. I spent a few weeks at the Phili Navy yard back in my military days. I barely remember visiting the cracked bell, but I'll never forget touring the USS Olympia and spending hours tracing pipes and valves down in the engine room. I hear it's in pretty sad shape now, but hopefully at least parts of it are still open.

The Reading Terminal Market was just down the street from where I stayed on some layovers when downtown in Philly. Definitely a must on the list.
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.

We were at Franklin yesterday and may stop by Reading today. Both within walking distance.

Got to talk shop today. Took a while to get anywhere with city hall. I was asking about a traffic management center. There isn't any. Finally connected with the traffic engineer and got the inside scoop on the local traffic scene. I have noticed a total disregard for ped indications by everyone here. If I get more time this week, I'll try to get by the signal shop.

Figured I'd use the chance to ask, is a signal shop a general term, or specifically a workshop for the government side of signals?
