Pennsylvania Turnpike Images of America Series

Postby Buttoncopy on Wed Dec 23, 2009 2:14 pm

Guys

Here is another great must have book for you!

It is the history of the PA Turnpike fully illustrated.

Gives the full history of the road including the additions and extensions even out beyond Pittsburg.

Also goes over all the tunnels that were originally supposed to be for the south penn rail line never completed.

Some of this info is readilly available from some great sites on the web but the photos in the book make it worth having.

Here are some examples

They also have one out on the Delaware river Brige (Ben Franklin) I'll have to pick up!

I read this two years ago for a report on the Turnpike for school, and I must back up Tony on its 'Must have' status. The book is worth it just for the awesome pictures.

Didn't know there was one on the Ben, gotta go to the library now.

It always gets me to see the old highway pictures like these, with natural and agricultural land in every direction and almost no traffic on the roadways. For all the hardships the older generations endured, they had something that's been lost.

I could not agree more and well said. I think this is a part of what brings us all to collecting signals... I know for me I deeply admire the detail, workmanship and pride that went into the older signals. I miss that 'give a damn' attitude in America.

I third Tony's recommendation. Great book with lots of background and some great pictures. This publisher also has a similar book (but a little less detailed) on the NJ Turnpike.

Thanks for the post and the pics Tony.

Great pics from a time when each highway had its own character and identity.

Thanks for sharing those Tony. :clapping:

A lot of interesting pictures in that book that were not in Dan Cupper's The Pennsylvania Turnpike: A History.
