Which Controller Should I Use?

Postby TheHOODLUM on Sun Dec 09, 2012 5:47 pm

I decided to make this a different thread than my questions about cabinet mounting. I'm trying to decide which controller and cabinet I should use to mount on the post with my TSI 2 way cluster. Probably the simplest would be to use the empty TSI cabinet I have with a LTG controller inside. But I want to hear noise and open it and see moving parts! So I have an Eagle EF-20 but the cabinet is the largest, and I have a CH PCN100 which is smaller for a short pole but it is very heavy. What are your opinions? I'm personally leaning to the PCN100 but the mounting issue and weight may be a problem.

The PCN100 cabinet needs restoration and I do have a keyhole cover for it. The TSI cabinet had the lock screws drilled out from the front so that will all need to be fixed, I do have a lock for it. The Eagle cabinet is unpainted and I should probably keep it that way, the controller will probably need work as the cam came out in shipping and a few cam lobes broke off.

I like the clunking sound of the Eagle better!!

But it is up to you....
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I second the Eagle. I have all of the same controllers and the Eagle is my favorite.

Can't beat a clunking Eagle.... However if you have the resources, make a couple wire harnesses up have them both there so that you can change between the different controllers when you feel like it.
That's what I have and it works well for me.

I would NEVER make the mistake of putting an Eagle on an indoor display if it will be running for the majority of the time. Too loud.

Noting Larry's wise advice about the potential noise factor of EM controllers in "inside display". (ironically one of their most endearing if also accidentally inconvenient characteristics?? :rob: ) My Electro-Matic sits on 1/8" felt in its cabinet, which in turn sits on a couple layers of thick felt pads on the tabletop where it lives at the moment. Even at that, it very efficiently transmits the THUNK-A of its solenoid quite thoroughly into the framework of this big old barn of a house, and can clearly be heard anywhere within when it is running. :Phil:

Roxy kitty has finally become mostly used to it, but I was still startled for a moment a few weeks ago when I was outside in the driveway and realized I could hear it THUNK-A out there, too...??

Spoiler:
and for the record Rich, I also think you should send me that poor empty TSI cabinet, so I could put my Teeco controller panel in it and hook it up to my TSI cluster (in process) in the bedroom. The Teeco runs basically silently, so I can leave it on while I fall asleep... ;) :Wink2: :beg: :beg:  :good:

OK with all your input I most likely will go with the Eagle as it can be mounted to the side of the pole with band brackets. This will be outdoors so the louder the better! Since the pole and base will be unpainted Aluminum I will leave the cabinet unpainted since that is the way it has always been and it would be a shame to paint it now. I'm still upset about missing the Ebay listing for that TSI cabinet with controller! that would have matched this display so well.
