Upcoming signals near you.

Postby curtdjdj on Tue May 28, 2013 3:08 pm

As of course, I still go to school  , but as i'm heading and leaving, I am always seeing new signals they're putting up (since it gets busier there for STOP signs). Since it's got me asking, anyone here getting new signals installed? Comment , links or pics below is allowed, like always I guess. I will try to send you all some pics, or vids.

I am a railfan, signalfan, and I'm interested in tornado sirens. I hope to learn new things about traffic lights because I'm interested in them and don't know much about them.

We (Macomb County, MI) have two major projects going on.

1. Total Replacement of signals and equipment

2. Upgrade of existing equipment

Total replacements are box spans with DuraSigs predominating the newest vehicle heads...Econolite poly is secondary at least up by me. Siemens and McCain 16 inch countdown peds. The LED fixtures are Dialight and GE.

All intersections were getting Iteris video cameras but have transitioned over to the much simpler and probably alot cheaper MS Sedco "Intersector" microwave sensors. A few intersections in southern Macomb County use Wavetronix radar detectors. Crosswalk buttons are primarily Polara Bulldog

All intersections have wireless short-hop interconnect by Encom, GPS I assume by Encom as well, and 360 degree surviellance cameras by Cohu.

NEMA cabinets have slowly been phased out in favor of 340 ITS cabinets. Predominiately Intelight but a few Siemens models were installed.

At intersections where the existing signals are remaining are LED'ed with Dialights, Campbell 4EVR crosswalk buttons go in and microwave detection for the side road. Wireless, GPS and survielliance goes in. Existing controllers are disconnected and spliced into Intelight 340 ITS cabinets.

I'm at work I'll try to get pics later

Nothing interesting is going on here in town. Although there is one signalized intersection twenty minutes away from me (in Toms River here in New Jersey) that currently has a new set-up that has been yet to be activated.
The intersection is Hooper Avenue and Bay Avenue. Right in the general area of the Ocean County Mall.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Bay+Lea+ ... a=N&tab=wl

This new set-up is made up of new pedestrian signal heads for the crosswalks present. Before, ordinary vehicular traffic signals used to serve as pedestrian signals. Though they will soon be removed from service. Four are currently in use, and, out of those four, two of them are original Marbelite TE-19408 (1970s version) traffic signals. N.J. style. These are the two that are still in use.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Bay+Lea+ ... 97,,1,0.14

Though I am not a fanatic of New Jersey's original traffic signals, I'd hate to see these go, since, as far as I know, they are the last of their kind in Toms River, New Jersey. At this same intersection, last year, there were an additional two present (two-way cluster), but they were replaced by a newer set-up.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Bay+Lea+ ... 2,,1,-2.56

Department of public works in Ocean County might remove these remaining two sometime within a couple of days. Since I drive through this intersection on practically a daily basis, I'll try to keep my eyes for utility trucks, so that I could try to at least acquire one (if not both). We'll see what happens.

Got some quick snaps on my commute home from work. Its stormy here today so I apologize for the quality.

New signals...DuraSigs with Dialights. This is at the intersection of 22 Mile and Van Dyke

Corner shot, wireless radio with microwave detector underneath on a short mast

From my hard drive...this is a Siemens 340 ITS cabinet controlling 22 mile and Van Dyke. Not as many vents on the cabinet door as Intelight's model.

Down the road at 22 Mile and Schoenherr. These are Econolite polys with GE GTX LEDs. Doghouse red is plastic :Phil:

ITS fun on the corner of 22 Mile and Schoenherr. The big metal sign are internal lit street signs with the words on the opposite side.

Also from my hard drive, this is a retrofit job, disconnected Eagle G cabinet with Intelight cabinet now running the show.

EDIT: Here's a much clearer picture of the same cabinets

Again from my hard drive, this is the inside of an Eagle M cabinet that has had it's original EPIC140 removed and replaced with Intelight 2070. This is from Metro Parkway and Mound I believe.

No new intersections, just signals being replaced. Very few new signals anyway. New brands being installed are Siemens, McCain, NAI, Peek, and rarely NOS TCT or CH

St Louis County is finishing the Patterson Rd ITS project in Florissant.
7 New P Cabinets (8 phase) replacing 6 P Cabinets and 1 M Cabinet, includes New Advance loops and Fiber Optic
Interconnect (Corning FO Cable and Splice boxes) also adding a "Pan/Tilt/Zoom" camera at New Halls Ferry Rd
BTW: A New P Cabinet with bells & whistles runs approximately $17000 installed

So long as it still works, nothing around here really gets replaced until a road project wipes it out. The county replaced some older cabinets at a couple intersections ten or so years ago but other than that, they just LED everything and leave it alone. I'd say most of the signals along the main roads near me are between 15 and 20 years old and a mix of McCain, TCT/Peek, LFE and Mark IV. Portland still has a fairly considerable number of intersections with Crouse-Hinds, Marbelite and old-school Eagle equipment although all the controllers have long since been upgraded. There hasn't been an electromechanical controller in P-town since 1992.

Earlier today, I was lucky enough to see two trucks at the intersection. They replaced the 8" heads that were originally located on the medians with new 12" Econolite traffic signals. I had to park my car on the grass and ask a worker if I could obtain at least one N.J. style Marbelite TE-19408. As much as he wanted to give me one (just to make his job easier as he said), I received the same answer. "Sorry, but no." Due to guidelines from D.O.T., these are generally recycled. A similar answered I received the last time tried to obtain one in Toms River, which was last year I believe. Still was worth a try, though.

I talked to the guy for a while at the intersection, and he told me from time to time, random people usually ask for this kind of stuff. Though they intend to make a profit off of them. I did tell him I was a collector and wanted to preserve this particular signal. He was rather amazed, since he didn't know about the interest and hobby. Was a pretty cool guy to talk to, since some others I met in the past were not so friendly to me for whatever reason, which is why I sometimes hesitate to ask if I see a couple of workers removing signals while on the road.
