Does Toronto count?

Postby notMUTCDcompliant on Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:25 pm

I'm here for a hellish 36 hours of working with UBS (I can't say consultant, or the Canada tax man will run after me for a license fee!)

I gotta say, the TTC subway/rocket from the airport might not be the cleanest (Read dust/dirt, not trash), but it's efficient, and was only $3!!! And the buses are real clean, and comfy!

I do have to say, the land of 12-8-8's with yellow backplates.... they look dam nice!

Our own mjmacpherson from the forum will be glad to here you say so. :good:
As a matter of fact he just might have been piloting that TTC subway you were riding on.

I too just had the good fortune of riding the airport rocket on my return from this years OSM. If only I didn't have to lug 48 1/2 lbs of signage (courtesy of NPTD 39), it would have been a great trip out to the airport. :dizzy:

I was fairly sure that mjmacpherson was with the TTC, but I wasn't sure if he was with the subway division or not. There Logo is even cool! I have to say, they keep everyone well informed. Apparently there was a medical emergency westbound at high park causing a delay, not nly did the conductor/operator keep us up to date, but it sounded like central dispatch was hardwired into the in car pa system via radio, plus the robotic voice for platform announcements... very well oiled machine!

Yea... I'm going to say that wouldn't be very easy on any Transport system, let alone the Rocket...

On another slightly different note, but somewhat related....

I'm trying to figure out how it takes 5 minutes to go from terminal 3 to terminal 1.... when they are 1000' apart... it's like a mini roller coaster ride!

Take a look.... http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=toronto+international+airport&aq=&sll=43.544567,-79.346008&sspn=1.284061,2.90863&ie=UTF8&hq=toronto+international+airport&ll=43.683562,-79.611783&spn=0.010397,0.022724&z=16

Follow the green #1's on the map and it gives you the idea of the root the bus takes.... and it did this the last time I was here also!

I didn't get to take ANY pictures.... but here are some observations:

These are in a lot of places... fold-able signs... didn't see any change:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.647814,-79.390211&spn=0.008291,0.034461&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=43.647928,-79.390295&panoid=svzD59xYwqVoe9rH4Z-Kyg&cbp=12,37.17,,1,-16.2

No idea what this indicates... it was NOT lit at 10 at night when I went by it:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.647877,-79.390082&spn=0.008291,0.034461&t=h&z=15&layer=c&cbll=43.647918,-79.389873&panoid=D2s2FrN9mHGTD8Jf5v9dyw&cbp=12,235.44,,2,-9.11

The only Incandescent red I could see in my little travels 12" tct flasher:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.650019,-79.387164&spn=0.004145,0.017231&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.650016,-79.387161&panoid=bN0na910wqCystUuN93ziA&cbp=12,151.39,,0,-2.47

Could see this from my hotel window... I love it:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.650019,-79.387164&spn=0.004145,0.017231&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.650147,-79.386458&panoid=NsLPrNvv1VbjPgOJ4RDPqw&cbp=12,83.12,,2,-5.74

There are 12 Fold-able signs on this intersection:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.670226,-79.386759&spn=0.009219,0.017231&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.670226,-79.386759&panoid=ZQSOZlOkhoKi2s3RRM42WQ&cbp=12,19.29,,1,-5.83

Looks like this intersection goes from no Left Trun to No Turns... when I walked thru it Sunday, The green balls were on and signs were all no left turn... Street view shows green arrows and no turns.

99% of everything I saw was LED's... exception being yellows, despite what streetview shows!

This intersection had an advanced flashing green!
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.631975,-79.544964&spn=0.036901,0.068922&t=h&z=14&layer=c&cbll=43.632045,-79.544875&panoid=UlrcAW3U-T_sw5Hzy6kzhg&cbp=12,46.19,,0,1.52

I was a bit confused here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.636184,-79.539986&spn=0.004146,0.017231&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=43.63618,-79.539981&panoid=EVF_hy0F-t8P8ziXeH6ZQg&cbp=12,299.03,,2,-7.17
This was for both directions on the cross street! I thought it meant no straight movement, right/left only... but it doesn't make sense here....

The only 8-8-8 I saw... IT SURVIVED LED's! Now has sexy GE Incans-looks.. the new real small matrix style.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Toronto,+Ontario,+Canada&aq=0&sll=40.198291,-75.539316&sspn=0.154719,0.275688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario,+Canada&ll=43.683686,-79.605196&spn=0.001036,0.004308&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=43.683685,-79.605193&panoid=C7InSOkcD17sDLbkus-KKA&cbp=12,95.27,,2,0.48

I agree with you Matt, the trains are getting dirtier and dirtier everyday.

Water ain't cheap ya know (Actually, the wash track at Greenwood yard has been broken for over a year now!!!).

If you want a decal or a car map, PM me.

Hey Matt,

Glad you liked the city.

I've noticed that they seem to have not been changing the flashers out to LEDs. Not sure why.

As to the amber's, I've noticed recently that the crews have been going back and changing all the ambers over to the new style GE LED (they look awesome). It's taking them time to get them all but each time I come into the city there are a few more intersections that have been converted.
