PPS Francis: Hopefully this is obvious but I would remove all sockets and wiring before exposing other parts to the lacquer thinner. The fumes could do a number on insulation and "bakelite" type parts, so I'd restrict cleaning to metal, glass, and porcelain.
If I can ever finish the restoration, it's going to look more like it used to than it ever did.

Yes, it was obvious, but costs nobody anything to state it anyway...just to be on the safe side! :hello:

I use the lacquer thinner trick also. I use it for many things besides signals.

I'm going to shut up after this - maybe. One thing I forgot to mention is lacquer thinner is cheaper in the long run than most paint strippers. AFAIK, a commercial stripper can be used only once and you wash off any excess when you're washing off the old paint. Thinner also collects paint particles but after you're through with a given project, you can put an old cloth rag across the top of a metal funnel and pour the thinner back into its original container - for reuse on your next project. You will always lose some thinner to evaporation and it will change color, depending on the paint, but used thinner seems to work as well as new thinner. I buy my thinner from a car paint company in 5 gallon cans. It's semi-expensive but a lot cheaper than buying 1 gallon cans from the home improvement stores.
If I can ever finish the restoration, it's going to look more like it used to than it ever did.

1 gallon of the good stripper is 35 dollars and 5 gallons of lacquer thinner is 42 dollars. That is my prices in town here.

I found a real good stripper one time, but then she left town.
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!

Hey Gordon, While I can agree your stripper and my stripper are both reusable, I only have to buy mine once and you're still going to have buy yours for every use. That's what happens when you buy by the piece and not by the gallon. Gotta go - I think I hear the censor police on the way to this post...

You might consider keeping the used stripper in a sealed 5 gal. plastic bucket for reuse, especially if it works? Just a thought :tease:

I mean is there a soulution out there you can buy by bulk and simply fill up a lined box of some sort. Simply dip the whole signal in and pull it out and all the paint is gone, I mean gone?

But what do you then do with the paint contaminated stripper chemicals?

I'm no tree-hugger, but I certainly wouldn't want to dump that stuff down the drain or into the wild...
I need all the help I can get.. :blind:
