I remember seeing them active years ago. The controller for the vehicle signals would pre-empt and dwell in red for the crossing, and the intersection 200 feet past would flash red.

The tracks go north a few miles and then dead end at what once was a Visteon plant. The plant's now gone and there is concern the land it was on is toxic....

That's sad looking.

I'd love to get my hands in there and get them back up and operations. Even without any trains. :)

Those stoplights are red - do they still cycle, even though the crossing's no longer used? What do they cycle for?

Yes they still cycle. The signals up the road and the nearside ones at the crossing operate on the same controller...at the time it was an EPIC 140 in a M36 or P Eagle cabinet.

The nearside signals overlap the farside intersection. They all come on green together, but stairstep back to red with the nearside changing first, and then the far side after a brief moment. The nearside cylce to red to keep backups at the farside intersection from stopping on the tracks. They never dwelled in green.

Not really necessary to have them anymore but they're still doing their thing until the county pulls the tracks for a trail which they've done for another line in northern Shelby Twp. Judging by the length of time these have been up I'd say they'll be up for a while yet.

Huh, that's interesting. I just went on a street-view drive down south, past 10-mile Rd until the line hit a major interchange yard, and ALL the other crossings look well-maintained. (Though many weren't really in spots I would want to ride my bike! ) I'm going to 'drive' north now, I'm curious to see the line. :)

Edit: Well, *that* didn't take long. I see that the north end of the line is what's getting abandoned, not southwards.

Yeah the abandoned part is the branch off to the Visteon site near 23 mile and Mound. Along 25 mile and Shelby road you'll find the Macomb Orchard trail, that was a rail line 15+ years ago.

Theres a line like that near me. In the town next to me, Milford theres an abondoned RXR crossing. Theres only an old cross-buck with lights and an overhead mass arm. Further downthe line theres an old paper factory, then bakery. There is very heavy sevurity because they are doing a toxic chemical clean up from the building, land around it, that glows in the dark (not kidding. My freind showed me, its nuts) and the delaware river

Somewhere between here and Wallops Island there were lots of intersections with abandoned 16" peds. They weren't turned away or covered, just turned off, and the instruction signs were blank (nothing on them, just the metal)

Up where I am, there's a track that looks abandoned as there are weeds growing and the signals are incandescent and there are rusty bells (well, there is a gelcore LED crossing). The BCRY 1001 freight train still comes along sometimes.
Just for the record, this has nothing to do whether they're abandoned or not. :) The only thing that means is that that crossing hasn't been upgraded in the last 3 years or so. And there are *a lot* that haven't been upgraded in the last 3 years or so. (Remember, unlike municipalities, Railroads spend their own money. There's no need to replace it if it still works..!)
Yea nvm, the train doesn't come anymore. so I guess they're hardly going to clean or upgrade them, until further notice.
I'll make it clear. They were abandoned since 1996. The only thing I don't get is why did they retrofit a crossing with gelcore with LED if they knew they wouldn't get far? :glare:

If they haven't filed for abandonment or stoppage of service with the STB, and haven't reported the crossing taken out of service to the FRA, then monthly, yearly, 5-year, and 10-year inspections still have to be done. If less than half of the light pairs are completely operational, then one would have to be fixed to make it compliant. The maintainer probably had no more bulbs in his truck, so threw in some LEDs.

This is all speculation, of course, seeing as how I don't work for that specific railroad, but likely there's some bureaucracy that's forcing them to keep it all maintained. Regardless of line status. Remember - it's NOT abandoned until they file with the STB, and requires maintenance until they do.

I went out and got some photos of the abandoned traffic lights near the test stands out at Redstone Arsenal today.

Can someone identify who made this signal? I couldn't get a look at the back of it because it was behind a gate.

I am a railfan, signalfan, and I'm interested in tornado sirens. I hope to learn new things about traffic lights because I'm interested in them and don't know much about them.

The double beacon is a type M also made by Crouse Hinds.
Moderately inspirational message.

I remember seeing lights and signs like those off of Memorial Parkway at Redstone Arsenal's back gates in the early 1970s. Went to Mtn. Gap Jr. High and Grissom High way back then. We use to drag race on some of the long roads leading into the southeast part of the base. Those roads were perfectly flat and straight and lead about 3/4 mile from US 231 to the gates which were almost always closed. This was near the area NASA would test fire Saturn 5 rocket boosters. Might have been the reason for the sound and light warning so no one was incinerated.

Good photos!

Cheers!
