DuraSig's smaller partner.

Postby coyttl on Mon Jul 15, 2013 1:11 pm

I may have asked this at Phil's a while back, but if I were to order a combo signal - say as 12-8-8, what would I get for the 8" sections? Is it even possible? Would it be a DuraSig, or an Eagle, or..?

Are you asking if they made them or what is on them?

You'd get 8 inch DuraSig sections badged with the Eagle logo and DuraSig trade name like the 12" but no "cone" on the back, its flat panels. The names/logos are still on the molds, but the actual "DuraSig" name has been dropped since Mark IV took over from Gulf and Western, and the Eagle name was phased out after Siemens took over from Mark IV.

You can order 12-8-8s from the distributors selling Siemens/Eagle stuff.

So on the 8" they're not called Durasigs, but still say it on the back? Or other way around?

They aren't called them DuraSig anymore from a industry standpoint, but they are still labeled as such.

DuraSig was a trade name under Eagle Signal for their 8 inch and 12 inch polys when it was owned by Gulf and Western in the 1970s and mid 1980s. The name and Eagle logo is on the back of both sizes

Mark IV did not continue the trade name, instead they called the DuraSig signals Type SA heads which Siemens still calls them. The LFE poly model and Aluminum Mark IV style bubble back model are Type SG poly andType SG aluminum respectively by Siemens.

The only model that received updated molds was the bubble back...the logo was taken off the back and a single EAGLE was put on the top of each section.

The lenses were not updated either, if you look at the rim of all square bird poly lenses, it still says "Eagle Signal: A Gulf and Western Company"

Here are some 8 inch DuraSigs I found in a google image search...credit goes to the person who took these photos (not me)

 So they're making two molds of poly signals? ..Wow, that's streamlining.

Thanks Nick. :D I may post a wanted ad, I need two black 8" sections.

:rotfl: Yeah they make two separate poly lines...which would be the DuraSig in 8" and 12" and the poly LFE in 8" and 12". Reflectors, lenses, and visors are the same between models. Not sure why they need to make two models...Siemens is using 20+ year old nearly unchanged designs. :Phil: Econolite, McCain, etc have updated their molds in recent years.

Good luck with your search... maybe try a distributor if you just need sections

Somehow I came across this on my search:
http://www.interprovincial.com/files/tr ... 20Info.pdf
Apparently it's the order sheet for Siemens.
interesting (or silly) to note that they have models -
SA - Like you mention.
SIG - The LFE molds, you mention.
SG - The LFE molds, if you have LEDs.
SPS - Same as SIG (LFE), but with a 6-terminal block.
SS - Same as SG (LFE with LEDs) but with a 6-terminal block.

..Really. Holy cow. That company could save serious cash if they got rid of half their management. Apparently, they have too many people working for them.

But - other interesting note is that they offer glass reflectors still! And, what the heck is an "Arizona" visor? And a "Russian" visor?

And they still offer a 'fiber optic'. No LEDs here..! Granted, I don't know the date of this document, so..

Sheesh. :)

It's kind of a shame the Alusig line was dropped, the smooth modern look of them is a lot easier on the eyes than the poly LFE in my opinion. edit: Or the aluminum LFE, although it's closer than the Poly's bubbly design

Personally I think the Alusig's were worse than some first generation poly's. Combine low grade aluminum with tight tolerance castings and you get trouble. Rare I see one that the door hasn't been pried or damaged in some way, or the outer casing hasn't been chipped away in an effort to open a stuck door.

You should come by here then, they're all in good shape as far as I've seen.
