EM, NEMA, whatever - if it controls a traffic signal, you can talk about it here.

G.E. e/m signal controller from New York City

Postby steven1981 on Wed Jan 23, 2013 2:51 pm

A couple of days ago, I came across this interesting photograph. It shows the interior of a cabinet from the city of New York. The signal controller that was inside of this cabinet was manufactured by General Electric, and the entire set-up was once located at the corner of W. 125th Street and Broadway in uptown Manhattan.

A gentleman from New York City's Department of Traffic makes sure the signal controller is properly synchronized for new traffic signal progression. Circa 1951. Photograph from Corbis.

I was always curious as to what was inside of these small cabinets.

Great picture  Where did you find it?
That's the GE Type D controller. I have one of those controlling a few signals.

Where is his Safety Yellow vast?
When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car!

I'm glad I don't have to wear a suit and hat to go work on timings in cabinets!

This gentleman was probably a civil engineer or some equivalent station with the city. Back in those days, if you had a job with a title of engineer - you wore a suit to work, no ifs, and, or buts. Even if you were out signal timing all day.

Times have changed. I'm an engineer and I can wear shorts, a T-shirt and flip flops to work if I so desired haha. They do however make me wear steel toes when I'm in the back playing with controller cabinets
