Where do these guys get their info?

Postby Easy on Tue Jul 02, 2013 7:35 pm

I was having a conversation with a local signal collector a few days ago, and he asked me if I knew anything about the Crouse Hinds 4 ways? I asked him what he wanted to know? He told me that he was in the process of buying a 4 way from a guy, and wanted to know which was older...a D or a DT? I told him that the " D "was older. He then asked me what was the difference in the 2? He produced a picture of a DT that the seller had sent him. He told me that the seller had told him that it was a " D " because of the cast visors. I told him that the reflector assemblies are the first give away of a D and a DT. I told him that both the D, and DT came with cast visors

I hope that the seller is not a member here, but a yesterday the local gave me a call, and told me that the seller told him that he had been collecting signals for many years, and the light was a D.

I've seen many signals on ebay with wrong information which leads to my questions? Where do these guys get their information, and how much do we club members really know about the difference between the D , and the DT?

I'm going to ask some questions, and see how much we really know? You never know...I might learn something!

Let's start with the hangers...what is the difference in the hangers?

It is like the darleys people thought they were 20-30's wrong! Same with the cast doors. In the catalog it says cast doors are standard and other visors are optional.

The early D with with large beads came with the one hook hanger

Willis??
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I look for the latches on the outside as far as "D" and "DT" goes. Sometimes the pic only shows the outside of the signal and the "D" has the smaller low profile latches. The "DT" has the tall fat latches on them.

I can't tell by the doors. My "D" has the removable visors yet my "DT" has the cast.

Can you be sure by the lens? Who knows if they've been swapped out or not

The best tell tale for me is to simply look inside, or have them send me a pic of the inside. The "D" has the cast reflector frames and "DT" has the aluminum stamped frames in them.

Another is to see if there's cork or rubber between the lens and door but that's hard to tell unless opened. Cork lens are "D" and rubber gasket is "DT".

Lens tabs as well. "D" lens tabs are bent while the "DTs" have a flat lens tab. These can only be seen if opened.

The best method for me is to look at the latches if there's no pic of the inside.

Easy,
I don't know the answer to this question and I think it is better to admit you don't know the answer rather than giving incorrect information....Just say you don't know rather than giving a wrong answer IMO :good:

Where does the "lettered" door fall into the mix?

Lettered doors - later DT's

Hangers
Brass, steel, one hole, 4 hotch, porthole, 1-1/4", 1-1/2". :Phil:

Doors, lenses, and latches are inter changeable. The way the reflector frames latch to the door frame, stamped aluminum vs. cast aluminum. Style of latch handles. Sockets. DT's have terminal strips, D's don't. D's & DT's use the same tops and bottoms, early D's have 1-1/4 holes....later D's & Dt's had 1-1/2". Later DT"S had top plates marked with 1-2-3-4 instead of N_S_E_W. D's have tags. D's use brass lense tabs, DT's-steel. D's use brass or brass coated screws, DT's-steel. If you find anything new add it to the threads below.

I stand corrected. These are only the geneal things I myself look for when looking at a CH light to determan make. Ya never know who swapped parts with a light your looking at. I mean the guy in the shop could have put in parts for the light with what was on hand or in the box. I can't immagine him staying with authanticity or telling the supervisor he can't do and order the right parts or it won't go out the door :nono: Isn't that illegal
Immagine that :silly: Mr. employee telling Mr. supervisor "Small bead smileys? Your going to order commands, lens tabs, and sockets before I put this back on the streets. Ya better order gaskets as well cause I aint moving without the original parts for this light."

I can tell you around here, you'll find Eagle 43E's with Econolite lenses. At our shop, green is green. Never looked at the logo on a lens. We're also in the "if it fits, it ships" class. Reflectors and shades were intermixed while we had the head apart for a sand/paint job.
