Animated Eyes Pedestrian signals.

Postby Buttoncopy on Wed May 27, 2009 7:27 pm

Option:
An animated eyes symbol may be added to a pedestrian signal head in order to prompt pedestrians to look for vehicles in the intersection during the time that the WALK signal indication is displayed.

Standard:
If used, the animated eyes symbol shall consist of an outline of a pair of white steadily-illuminated eyes with white eyeballs that scan from side to side at a rate of approximately once per second. The animated eyes symbol shall be at least 300 mm (12 in) wide with each eye having a width of at least 125 mm (5 in) and a height of at least 62 mm (2.5 in). The animated eyes symbol shall be illuminated at the start of the walk interval and shall terminate at the end of the walk interval.

Anybody ever see one of these?

Weird! I wonder how many people would even catch on to that, they might think it's a Big Brother warning or something instead.

Also, a little off topic, but does anyone know why the MUTCD specs everything in metric units now? It's really strange.

I've seen a few of those "animated eye" signals in Hamilton Ontario. They seem like a stupid idea to me. Just something else that can distract drivers.

If pedestrians have to be warned of cars in the intersection, maybe it'd be better to have an exclusive ped phase, instead of some distracting symbols...I've read about these in the MUTCD too, but have never seen one.

Bellevue experimented with the animated eyes ped signals (like the bottom one on the previous post) several years ago, but then replaced them with normal ped signals.

There was one like the one on the top used on Hwy 99 several years ago, but the install was replaced with a standard crosswalk signal.

Just plain weird! I am trying to remember where I spotted these. I think it was in a suburb of Chicago when I was there in April.

They were made here in Michigan right by the old AMT factory until they went bankrupt. Not sure anyone's making then now.

Are you kidding? We actually have to remind people to look both ways before crossing the street? No, really are you kidding? What's next? Why don't we have a signal that has a man sneezing with a hand over his mouth? No wait let's have one that's....ahh the hell with it. Common sense is dead in this world. It won't be long before it's a high school course required for graduation.
