I've never been a big fan of targets. I think they hide too much of the lantern.
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!

OK, I'll be the first to admit my ignorance. In this context, what's a target?

A target is a colored disk that surrounds the lens. Sometimes referred to as a 'day target', it mounts to the body, and usually is the same color of the lens it surrounds. (There are exceptions.)

From my restore thread:

The target is the green border around the lens.

Depending on the railroad, and the line, those lanterns had some options:
- With Targets
- No Targets, no Hoods
- With Hoods
Hoods and targets did not go together, because of how they mounted.
There were also several lens styles -
- 4.5" came in standard glass, but
- 5.75 came in reflectorized (a much later option), diffused, and normal.

Lens colors included - Red, Green, Yellow, Clear, Lunar White, Blue, and Violet. I've only seen targets in Yellow, Green, Red, and White, however.

Just for grins, here's a couple pics of a few more old RxR lanterns. Technically these aren't mine -- they belong to my roommate. (but they're still in the same house, so I get to enjoy them too...!) One of them is similar to yours Mark, but obviously the others were for some different function.

This rather unique light is also displayed in the 'train room'. My roommate has said that this was actually a headlamp for an old Chicago EL train, but that's all I know about it. Interestingly, it appears to have been made by Crouse-Hinds!

Cool pic's Tim, I'm getting anxious to see my Grandfather's signal in person, and bringing it home with me!
