Active old 4-ways in Canton, Mississippi

Postby khardy on Thu Jul 04, 2013 7:43 am

Hiya Folks,

We drove through Canton, Mississippi on Tuesday, 2 July while visiting family in the area. While driving around the old town square where my father grew up I noticed two span-wire four-ways hanging at the intersection of West Center and North Union Streets. I do not know what kind of lights these are but thought I would share photos.

View from Union Street looking NNE.

White building on right is old Post Office building on Union Street looking SSW.

The other three intersections for the courthouse square are modern lights on posts and masts.

I asked my aunt about these two 4-way signals and she said the city decided to keep them up after they filmed the movie "A time to Kill" in 1996.

Here is the Google Maps link for the town square. You will have to pan around to the right to see the signals on street view.

Cheers!

I'm no expert but they look like Eaglelux 4-ways to me. Great find!

They are a pair of eagles. Can't tell the type without closeups or opening the doors.

Hi Folks,

Here are some of the same photos of the lights in Canton. These are cropped close-ups from the original photos.

Keith,

That last pic you posted shows a hybrid Eaglelux/Eagle head. Yellow and red sections look to have the early Eaglelux hinge setup, and the green section has the wider spacing of the flatback era Eagle doors. Probably a replacement section, as evidenced by the chewed-up bottom plate.

It's rare that they choose to keep them in service. Nice find!

I wonder if those lights were in service at that intersection when I was a teen 35+ years ago. May dig through some old photos from around the courthouse square when we get back home from NC next week.

Cheers!
