Help:Crouse Hinds DT 4-way: correct order for reassembly...?

Postby Detroit_Galaxian on Sat Nov 29, 2008 12:43 pm

Hey gang -

I'm tackling the final assembly of my 4-way DT project this weekend. I have some minor concerns that I'm hoping you can walk me through...

In particular, it's the hinge rods that attach the reflector assemblies to the door frames... It seems that can only be inserted from the top down (or was it bottom up) : therefore those need to be in place before all of the door frame sections are tie-rodded together. This leaves me wondering if it's going to be better to build the reflector assemblies before attaching them to the door frames; or to build them in place after the signal body is assembled.

Which route do you suggest will be the easier route... (?)

 Route A

1. Build the entire reflector assemblies. (Except for light sockets.)
2. Attach reflector assemblies to door frames with the hinge rods.
3. Screw together door frames, and tie-rod the entire signal together.
4. Add wiring harnesses and attach light sockets to reflectors.

 Route B

1. Just attach the outer reflector frames to to the door frames using the hinge rods.
2. Screw together door frames, and tie-rod the entire signal together.
3. Add wiring harnesses and sockets.
4. Now build the complete socket & reflector assemblies.

Thanks -
Ryan K

Ryan,
It doesn't really matter.
Personally I start with a bucket, then stack the bottom plate, then the sections, I put the top on and then install the rods. Just make sure everything slides together evenly, otherwise the light will be cocked on one of the corners. From there, I install the reflector frames, then doors (preassembled with the latches), get all the wiring done and if the reflectors are glass I install them last.

Couple things;
Place the sockets in the frames but don't tighten them down until the reflector is in place.
Same goes for the rods. Don't tighten everything until it's all aligned and evenly slipped together.
Don't try and build an entire side at one time. The light will get unbalanced and make it difficult to assemble. (Unless the bottom plate is bolted down to something sturdy.)
Up until it's time to install the visors, you can work with it flat on the table or use a bucket an assemble it vertically.

I'd come help you but I'm playing with Ed's ACME :acme:
Remember, they're watching you. :easy:
