Flatback Finial?

Postby 3Mfanatic on Sun Jul 07, 2013 5:19 am

I just found a photo taken in downtown Portland in 1964 and it shows what appears to be a round-lens flatback WAIT/WALK signal with an ornate finial and as this is the type of signal I'm restoring to then-Portland standard, I'm curious about it. Is this something Eagle offered as an accessory or is it a non-Eagle part affixed to an Eagle signal?

Thanks. :hello:

Looks like an Eaglelux to me with those fins. Very cool finial!

As I understand it, those finials were available from Eagle. Someone had these reproduced at some time and I was able to purchase one for my little Eaglelux beacon. I don't remember who I bought the finial from though...

This one appears to be the same as the one in your photo.

Kohl. I only did the short version.

It's definitely a long-fin Eaglelux and those were Eagle finials.

I spent a quite a bit of time in the Northwest during the 1980s when a lot of these older lights were still in operation. The older clamp hardware could be found quite a bit, but this is the first time that I have seen a set-up with the old Eagle finial. Could this have been a chic or boutique part of town? Great photo find!

This part of Broadway was the shopping and theater district at the time so I guess you could call it that. Most of the Portland WAIT/WALKs I ever saw in service had clamp hardware with pipes top and bottom, no ornamentation.

Did he do metal or were they of wood? I have seen some done with wood.

Would love to have more finials - I'm lucky to have one for my CH-4way.
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.

Yes Larry is right. Mine is an aluminum casting.

Larry - Don't you still have some of the short versions available for sale?

Great pic.
That looks to me like a GE finial
At risk of Jerry coming over with bat in hand and to some please turn away at this most unholy of sights. I admit this isn't a 5" CH finial on a CH Ped signal but a GE finial on a CH Ped signal. The finial in the pic looks like the finial I have on my CH, the orange juicer GE finial. http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u36 ... 200cd0.jpg

I hope I don't get my membership revoked for showing this
