Hello from Virginia

Postby wacase1964 on Sun Jun 10, 2012 11:36 am

I just joined this forum. I've been interested in traffic lights all of my life. I use to make intersections when I was kid. I would use tinker toys to make the traffic light poles and then carve out the signals from styrofoam. Anyway, I just purchased a pair of 9 inch eagle pedestrian signals. I believe they were in service somewhere in the Raleigh/Durham/Greensboro Area. I could be wrong, but I believe North Carolina replaced some of there 9 inch glass lenses with the plastic Hand/Man lenses in the late 80's or early 90's. In any event, I don't think I have the original lenses for these signals. These eagle signals look lke the type that were installed in the 60's and early 70's before Durasig took over the design. I'm hoping to replace the platic Hand/Man lenses with glass lenses. Lucky, I was able to find what you guys call a lunar white walk lens on ebay, and I'm now hoping to find a lunar blue lens and written don't walk lenses. If I can find the glass lenses, then my goal is to paint the signals dark green and go for a Michigan theme. Look foward to sharing ideas with you guys.

Welcome! The written DONT WALK lens shouldn't be too hard to find. Lunar Blue WALK lens, that's another story! Good luck on your search!

Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Thanks for the welcome.

I figured the lunar blue lens will be almost impossible to find. If my memory is correct, I think Michigan was only state to use them. I'll probably will try to find a standard written WALK lens to use for the time being and hope that somehow I'll run across the lunar blue one. The Kopp WALK lens I got on ebay has blue colored glass with similar markings to the lunar blue lens, but it lit up white when I put it in the signal. When I originally purchased it, I thought it was a lunar blue lens. :rob:

Hello, Andy. Welcome to the forums. We share similar memories from childhood.

In regards to that lunar blue "WALK" lense, I sometimes see a handful that are auctioned on Ebay from time to time. In fact, I came across one that was in decent shape about three weeks ago or so. All I could say is keep your eyes peeled on there every now and then for what you want.

Are you sure Steven that those aren't the ones that look blue when off, but light up white when illuminated? It is very hard to tell the difference without actually lighting them up.

What I came across was blue, however, the seller did not have a picture of it illuminated. I just assumed that is what it was. My eyes might have deceived me, though.

It was in decent shape, and it seemed that the blue was peeling off (if that was the case) on some parts of the lense.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the old listing for it on Ebay. Must've been removed.

Jerry (I hope this is the name you prefer)

Do you have to light the lens up to tell the difference between the lunar white and lunar blue, or can you tell by looking at the lens. I looked closely at the your 9 inch eagle WAIT/WALK signal on your website and the glass for lunar blue's looks like it has a darker tint of blue. I was also curious who manufactored the lens. Is it Kopp?

Yes, since Jerry is my name, that is what I prefer! LOL

I personally am unable to tell the difference between a lunar blue lens and a lunar white lens that looks blue when off. I need to see them lit up to tell. Others may be able to tell without lighting them up, but I cannot. I just looked at my lunar blue lens to see if there is any markings or writing on the rim and there is not. No markings at all. Some pedestrian lenses have a crosshatched pattern in the glass on the back. The lunar blue lens has a frosted appearance instead of the crosshatch pattern and stripe containing the word WALK is painted or baked on the front of the glass.
