Lack of Signs

Postby khardy on Fri Jul 19, 2013 1:03 pm

Hiya Folks,

We have returned home after being gone for 19 days. During our trip from Houston, Texas to Winston-Salem, NC and back, we drove through 10 states sight-seeing and seeing what we can find. We stopped at many junk shops/yards, thrift stores, etc. and didn't see very many old road signs or cool old advertising signs. Talking with many of the owners of these shops, they claim to have been cleaned out of those items in recent years.

We did manage to find a few goodies on this trip.

My sister gave us this old rusty sign.

Piggly Wiggly sign from somewhere in northern NC.

Another find in NC.

Found near Texarkana. Plan to repaint the raised word "Plaid" red.
Image

Cheap metal sign to cover leak in roof on our steel shed out back.
Image

A few other treasures... as if we don't already have enough clocks.

The clock to the left is an advertising clock for Postal Telegraph made by Hammond Instrument Co. between 1935-1939. The Royal Crown Cola light most likely came from an old soda dispenser. Plan to re-electrify for use under our awning out back. The old telephone bell and siren I am thinking of connecting to the fire alarm switch we recently acquired and attach to our police lights on the porch.

Observations we made were most shops were totally devoid of signage. We did pass on a few items mainly due to exorbitant pricing. We plan to drive to central Colorado next month and hopefully we will have better luck with finding some cool items.

Cheers!

That Plaid Stamps sign is cool. I assume it's plastic?

  What are Plaid Stamps anyway?

I've been wanting to get one of those Postal Telegraph clocks for years, but never had enough $$ to justify buying one.

Larry, the Plaid Stamps sign is plastic and measures about 3 x 4 feet. Was part of a two sided lighted sign at one time. Bought it from a roadside junk shop for real cheap. Plaid Stamps were given out by grocery stores corresponding to the amount of purchase. These stamps like S&H and Value stamps could be redeemed or traded for items they would list in catalogs. The present day version are stores that issue "points" which are used for discounts.

Gordon, we found our clock on some back road in an old shed near Winston-Salem, NC during a junk/yard sale along with a hand crank ice cream machine. One of our kids had the recent experience of making home-made ice cream while visiting relatives in Mississippi and we bought that for him so he would not forget.

As to the clock, I took it completely apart yesterday, cleaned everything. Separated all the clock mechanism parts and gears to degrease. Reassembled mechanism, oiled with sewing machine oil. The clock is completely back together and seems to be keeping good time.

Here is the clock hanging on the wall. We liked the look of the clock so did not do a full restoration.

Hi Gordon,

We placed this 20 inch in diameter clock in our bedroom above Sondra's dresser. Compared to the other clocks in the room, we will not have any problem with seeing what time it is in the mornings.

Cheers!

Hi Keith,

I just found this one. It's special since it says USAF on it. (I retired after 20 years service).

Awesome Gordon! Like how it has military time on the face. Have you been able to date the clock yet? Postal Telegraph became part of Western Union in 1943 so it will have been made before then.

Thank you for your service to our country!

Cheers!

Ditto! And between the 2 of you, it now seems an old clock is a must!
