Pre-1964 N.Y.C. street sign

Not my picture, but this one shows an interesting street sign in use on Staten Island in New York, in which was installed before aluminum vinyl street signs first appeared in the picture.

The photographer took this picture in recent years (I believe 2011), and this was a forgotten gem that lingered for many years before D.O.T. finally found it. It is interesting to me, because this kind of street sign was also in use in Brooklyn in the 1950s. The only noticeable difference between both is the color scheme. Here, this one shares the same color scheme that was presumably adopted in later years when vinyl aluminum street signs first began to appear on the streets of Staten Island sometime after 1964 or so.

Something similar was afoot in Manhattan at the time. I've yet to find out when exactly color-coded signs were introduced, but clearly porcelain was still in use when they were.

These?

They came about sometime in the early 1950s, and they were similar to their predecessors, which were the "humpback" street signs, since they showed the street a driver was on and cross street. From what I recall, it seems that the former dept. of traffic continued to manufacture this kind of street sign as far back as 1962. There's one that was manufactured and dedicated for John Glenn's first orbit around the Earth as an American in 1962. This is not mine, but this is one of a handful that were manufactured and temporarily used in the city. Labeled as "ASTRONAUT WAY."
