Old news...but still cool

Postby EPAC-EPIC-MARC on Sat Jun 23, 2012 3:03 pm

Found this short article about Siemens' buying of Eagle Signal. Did not know they had a second manufacturing facility!

Too bad the name was changed again from "Eagle Traffic Control Systems" to "Siemens ITS" around 2008..

They have phased out the Eagle branding on just about every piece of equipment or label on the new controllers/cabinets. But the Durasig branding and Eagle logo on the Durasigs still remains. Not for long I suppose.

I will still refer to everything as Eagle.
I'll never call it Siemens :hurl:

Technically the DURASIG brand name expired in November of 1993. The current name for that brand is the "SA Model" The molds were never updated. I'm sure the Eagle badging on the signals will remain for a long time. Same goes for the LFE branding...that's been Eagle since the early 90s too.

I'm partial to the Eagle name too...and its legacy! Siemens cut production on all the Eagle controller hardware...EPAC300, EPIC140, and MARC300. They only produce the softwares, the Siemens M50 (black M50), the ATC NX (a heavily modified EPAC M42 controller) and a 2070 controller.

I will still refer a"SEPAC"unit as an EPAC unit.I still have my converted M02 that was refered as Eagle Signal Controls. It had the eagle with open wings logo on the front(serial, model,& date code stamping area). If I had an opportunity to collect more early EPAC units(M03/5),I would score me at least two more units.

SE-PAC is the software, not the controller itself. It was software installed on all the EPAC 300s, and one of the multiple softwares available for the EPAC M50s and Eagle 2070 controllers. The Eagle traffic controller using the "EPAC" acronym was the blue colored M50 series. It was badged as "Eagle Traffic Control Systems"

I, too, think that it is sad how Siemens is slowly but surly removing the Eagle name from all of their products, seeing how the Eagle name goes way back and holds an important place in signal history (they were one of the original major signal manufacturers).

It is interesting to note that the latest version of SEPAC on the M50 controllers still says "Eagle EPAC300" on the main menu screen.

The days of the EPAC300 name on the software are numbered too. But what I found interesting is how Siemens immediately changed the molds for the 12 inch "Mark IV" models when they took over Eagle, but didn't change the badging for the DuraSig. The DuraSig name was a Gulf and Western brand so when Automatic Signal/Eagle Signal formed the name technically expired. To me this more recent history on the company is just as interesting as its heyday!

Had to go back through my in-service pics, and sure enough, under the Siemens ITS menu title, in does appear to say Eagle EPAC300!

Explains why my Mark IV has Automatic Signal and Eagle Signal in the logo

Of course being a Mark IV it needs painting
