Carnival decoration or real signal?

Postby EdT. on Fri Jul 27, 2007 11:50 am

I was contacted by a fellow (referred to me by a secret sharer) who has in his possession the 6 foot tall traffic signal pictured below. He seemed to think that this was a carnival or amusement park decoration but just wanted to make sure. I share his assessment, but also would like a second opinion. I know it almost seems obvious that it's just that (not a real signal), but it's just that the top, bottom and base seem a bit too ornate (or at least, not easily crafted) for just a decoration. And the craft paper 'lenses' could have been added on after the original assemblies went missing. Anyone?

He wrote to me first. I couldn't figure it out either, but I guess it is a well made one-off.

In th second picture there looks to be some sort of electrical connection on the leg near the base. Any idea how many connections? Might be a clue how it was used. Carnival would probably 4 pin so all sides are the same but a true signal would need closer to 7 four two phase operation.

But with green on top though I wonder if it was a Potter signal like the one Jerry saw at The Henry Ford and then built his own version. Then a four pin connector would work.

Ed,
Do you know how big the lens opening is?
I was researching somethings the other day and I came across some real old 4-ways. The article said that the first 4-way had 4-1/2" lenses. The pictures I saw were very similar to this. (NOw if I can only remember how I found those articles.....)

Mike, I don't know what the lens openings are, but I can put you in contact with the guy if you like.

I recall reading about William Potts using RR lenses for his first signal, so I wouldn't be surprised if similar inventors used them as well. I sure hope you can find those articles again. Maybe check your browser history?
