Is this the correct lens for a Crouse-Hinds Type M Traffic Signal? The lenses are all glass and say" Corning Made in USA 8 3/8" D.N.F. RDL. Type T2 I.T.E. Spec." They look like Smiley Lenses. Just curious if these are original or added later.
Thanks.

Jim,

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I in CH spec will join in, but I believe these to be correct for that signal. They are sometimes referred to as faint smileys.

Ed,
I believe you are correct. Those are faint smileys. As you know with every new product, earlier parts were still being sporadically produced as they transitioned into the full scale production. Faint smileys, the way that I understand it, were the next transition out from small bead smileys. That would put them in the type M lights.

the faint smiley began in the deco with lettered doors then were carried over to the type M, then CH came out with a new lense that looks exactly like the faint smiley but without the smiley, the new lense was used in most of the type M's

If those are faint smileys would that mean this M is an early version? I read somewhere the Type M was introduced in 1952 and was manufactured for several years.

1952 Started the DT line but CH was working on the M and it started making special appearances in the early 50's but didn't become popular and appearing in the catalog until the late 50's, with out looking I think it was 59.

The M could be an early one, what does the door catches look like, if there small and brass, early style, larger and stainless and look like the type R, later style
