Darley 2 Color Restoration in Progress

Postby rustyfoot on Sun Apr 07, 2013 10:43 am

I started a restore on a Darley 2 color several weeks ago. This project started with only a Darley double stack body with eight reflectors and sockets…..that is all I had to work with. The rest of the parts were found here and there.
The yellow paint on this body was several coats thick and very difficult to remove. Part of it was baked on and super tough. Paint stripper removed about 90% of the paint and then finished out with bead blast using 80 grit glass bead. The aluminum casting was broken in several places so I repaired using several different products. The reflectors and reflector frames were in good undamaged condition needing only a good cleaning. The reflector frame hardware was cleaned and polished using the brass wire wheel on a bench grinder. The eight sockets are getting some of Gordon’s magic touch with a rewire & refurbish.
I plan to leave this Darley in it’s natural color…..It is cool looking just as you see it!…no paint for this guy!
This project is going on the back burner now until the sockets are done and I find lsome lens.
I will add a few more pictures when this signal is finished.
At least I've saved this signal from going to the scrap pile and being lost forever!
This photobucket site has become so invasive and sluggish it boggs down my computer and all but shuts it down. I will post more pictures later if I can find a better way. Photobucket is a sad excuse....If I can't find a better site to store pictures to upload to the forum I will not post anymore restores. :nono:

Looks like all of the reflectors are from a CH DT.

Well, that would 'splain the CH sockets that Chris sent to me.

I didn't realize the CH reflectors would fit in a Darley. This reminds me I need to come up with something for the inside of my bucket top, there's no reflectors on the inside.

This looks great!! What did you use to repair the cracks and holes? Did you weld it or use epoxy?

Thanks for sharing.

No weld...used expoxy..JB Weld and some other products. I will check my shop tomorrow and send you some more information. I found a new product that sets up in 20 minutes that is easy to work with...

My Darley 2 color was bead blasted 2 months ago. I got to this point in the restoration and stopped and waiting on the sockets to be rewired and some lens. In the meantime A question came up not long ago in the club about what would happen if the signal was left in a natural state without any paint or clear coat to protect it. I decided to keep an eye on the signal and observe any changes. Well, here is the answer :good: ....The signal has darkened in color and especially the places on the signal that have been handled. It is not uniform and even looking! :nono: In view of this developement I decided to paint the signal a natural satin silver color. I will add pictures to this thread tomorrow when I get the signal back together. It is a nice natural looking silver color and I will include the paint information in case any of you want to give it a try. :tease: :hyper: I have Darley's in several different colors and IMO the Darley signals look better in a natural silver/aluminum color IMO. I think it might have to do with the crude aluminum castings
Sorry, but I forgot to take pictures of the signal before painting.....to many projects going on at the same time. :tease: :hyper: :dizzy:

Here are a couple of pictures of the Darley 2 color painted with a dull aluminum paint. It looks real good IMO. I've also posted pictures of the paint if you want to give it a try. Good luck
