Hello from Alabama

Postby sw6416 on Thu Mar 28, 2013 7:10 am

Hello everyone i'm Shannon from Alabama. I have to admit I never really thought much about traffic signals until a few months back. I am a picker by trade and will buy and sell most anything of value if its legal and worth the effort. So rewind a few months back and I ran across a guy wanting to sell to a old Crouse Hinds with the Corning smiley lenses and I knew nothing about them. I scoured a few web sites looking for as much info as I could find. In the process I ran across Signal Traffic Forums and thought what the heck I will sign up ....... I thought it might be value resource one day as I admit I was almost tempted to do a restoration on this old signal to begin with, because I enjoy that sort of thing. I ended up selling the Crouse because it had 4 sides and I really didn't have room to display it and the energy to fight the wife about why it needed to be on display. Now fast forward back to today and I have found myself the owner of a older Plessey with the red stop command lens. Its a single sided signal and would be much more feasible to have a old signal of this size on display for space reasons if I decided to attempt a restore. I can find very little info on these and have a few questions if thats ok? Are they desirable in the hardcore circles of signal hoarding lol ..... and also any ideas on what something like this could be worth? Thanks in advance everybody and have really enjoyed the forum. http://i1075.photobucket.com/albums/w428/vintagepoloking/plessey_zps8a570235.jpg

HI Shannon...and welcome to the club. The Plessey signals were used in the UK. There are definitely some collectors here in the US who find them to be cool (I like them, anyway!), but I have no idea on a what they have sold for in recent public auctions.

Where in AL are you from? I'm a tried and true Yankee, but I lived in NW Florida for a couple years, and frequently explored Alabama, especially the southern tier of the state.

I live up in North Alabama in a town called Albertville that nobody has ever heard of. I have lived all over but I guess I have come back to die! Tried to get away before many times but home will always be home I guess.

Yes, home will always be NJ for me...anyway, if you leave NJ, it's hard to afford to return!

I am aware of Albertville. I have a ridiculously detailed knowledge of (especially US) geography, so I know that Albertville is up near Guntersville and Arab, without looking at a map. My long-past experience in meteorology and drawing weather maps by hand didn't hurt this particular skill!

Small world ....... yes from my past experiences noticing people in meteorology they indeed make exceptional geographers. Guess it comes with the territory. Speaking of Guntersville me and the wife spent as much time as possible on the boat at the lake during the summer its a beautiful place ...... but I am biased.

Northern AL is particularly beautiful, I agree. I did stay in Cullman for a few days once, and I have driven up and down 59 a few times...all of this was in the 90s.
