Porcelain Lights

Postby khardy on Mon Sep 02, 2013 11:22 am

Hi Folks,

I have always liked the way the old porcelain lights looked since I was a kid. Whenever I see some, it brings back memories of visiting my grand parents in central Mississippi. The area they lived in was surrounded by a discontinued WW2 military powder storage base. Many of the bunkers we would play in had some of these old porcelain lights. Some of the old stores and gas stations still had the pre-war look in the 60s and 70s. Most of this is now gone.

While wondering around our part of town, we came across these...

The green and white shade was originally white but someone painted the outside of it green. Most of the porcelain looks intact and will clean off the green. This light is 17 inches in diameter and with the conduit about 33 inches in length. The red and white gas station looking shades are 20 inches in diameter.

We plan to install one of the red and white porcelain shades above the doors on our barn. Have already threaded and bent some conduit for this one and will install in a couple of days. The other two we are not sure where to put yet.

We already have one porcelain lamp installed out back over the work bench. The light shade is 18 inches in diameter.

The post came from the junk lot earlier in the summer.

Would like to see photos of what others have done with their old porcelain lights.

Cheers!

That green one mounted to the bottom of a 4-way beacon would bother some purists, but it sure would make a neat chandelier.

I've got a boxful of these:

Was sorta envisioning a row of them hanging over/along the kitchen counter somehow (someday?) when I acquired them (cheap!) some time ago. Unfortunately, I haven't ever been successful at identifying (much less acquiring, affordably?!) whatever kind of fixture/socket/etc they screwed onto... :Phil: :rob:

You know, things must be getting pretty crowded over there...I'd be glad to, um, store that US 90 shield if you need some more room for your porcelain lights and other items.

I've always liked those porcelain lights as well, hopefully I can find one some day myself! I don't recall seeing many for sale in my travels so far.

Hiya Folks,

We installed two of the porcelain lights we recently picked up.

This is on the outhouse.

This is on the barn.

Was late in the day when we finished with installation. Sun is setting so will get a couple of better photos tomorrow.

BTW, Troy you have a cool set up in your yard. Love the Sinclair materials. :hello:

Cheers!
