Level crossing for.... an aeroplane

Postby dlau on Wed Jan 28, 2009 1:29 am

from Gibralter Airport, Spain. A main road here intersects with the runway in an airport.
Is it popular for roads to intersect an airport runway in the US ???

Here's how the level crossing look like:

By the way, the signals (at least the ped) look a lot like the UK standard mellor.

Sometimes in private fly-in communities, but I have never seen a public road intersect a runway. In those communities it is common to see signs that say "Airplanes Have Right-of-Way"

David, that's great, thanks for the link. I wonder how many people run THAT light?

Vaughn, they actually have to have a sign stating that "Airplanes have the right of way"?! I can just imagine some bozo playing chicken with the airplane, thinking to himself, "He'll turn"...

Gibraltar is British and therefore in the UK.

Therefore they are all UK standard heads. They are late 1970s + early 80s mellor heads at the crossing.

Lane Control Signals are early 1980 Forest City models.

Cool Photos David!

I've never seen this set-up in the United States at least at a major Airport.

I'm pretty sure that both Las vegas International and Denver International have Highways that pass beneath the runway. This looks pretty cool to see a jet going accross a major interstate!

Can lay my hands on a photo at the moment I'll have to look around.

Yeah, there are plenty of roads under runways here too.
However, this isn't a interstate/motorway at all, in fact, it's just a normal dual carriageway road linking Spain with Gibraltar. It has full pedestrian pavements and cut outs in the centre, with a 30mph speed limit :-P

See here for map.

We have several tunnels under main runways, Manchester International for example, which has 8 Lane Control Signals and a bunch of secret sign (prism boards) to close it during an emergency.

On the other hand, it's not uncommon to install WWSH (Wig Wag Signal Heads) to a road which passes the runway, due to aircraft interference with traffic flow, i'll dig out some pics.
