Safe to remove from EF-70?

EM, NEMA, whatever - if it controls a traffic signal, you can talk about it here.

Safe to remove from EF-70?

Postby NKS_Signal on Mon Nov 24, 2008 5:00 pm

I would like to remove the filter highlighted in red. Would it be safe to do so? Is it really necessary to have?
Thanks,
Nabil.

From what I understand, the filter is totally safe to remove; it looks like a line noise filter, which filters out interference from the AC coil in the controller that causes AM radio static and things like that. However, the question is, why do you want to remove it? Is it causing problems? Removing it may annoy your old neighbors who listen to AM radio I suppose... :talker:

Thank you Dan.

I am trying to clean out the controller a bit, getting ready for some use. I will also be breaking the connection between ground and AC. Hopefully I wont get shocked. Image

I would say if it is already hooked up like that, it would almost be more work to remove it and remake those connections than it would be to just leave it. Everything should fit around it anyway. What is the little black thing with the ID tag on it on the left? I wonder if maybe that is the interference filter...I've yet to have the opportunity to stick my head into an EF70 so I don't know for sure.

It's a Mercury relay, seems to be standard equipment on an EF-70 (not an EF-20 though). When activated it makes a loud buzzing sound, so it has since been replaced with a standard relay.
