View actice topics shows nothing now

Postby Canuck_in_TX on Thu Jul 19, 2012 12:17 pm

Nothing ever shows for view active topics ever since tweaking was made to the forum a couple weeks ago.
A cop pulled me over and said, "Papers..." So I replied, "Scissors! I win!" and drove off.

I use 'View New Posts', since it's right there at top.

What's the difference?

"View New Posts" seems to be limited to threads that added new content since the last time you viewed them [EDIT: Testing this theory out...my statement is not accurate]. I'm not sure what the query parameters for "View Active Topics" is, but it brings up a larger result set.

There are some glitches that will be resolved soon.

In the interim, viewing the individual forums will display the posts in chronological order (newest first).

Thanks for your patience.

Odd. Usually, I only care about the posts that have new content. (I mean, if I read everything in Post 'Y', would I want to see it again? I'm not sure! )

Another forum I visit has the 'Active' and 'New' links too, and I've always wondered about the difference.

"View New Posts" seems to periodically update itself on some time-schedule, so items posted shortly before said updates can easily pass unseen, until the point when they might get a response and thus reset their place in the queue. If you use "View New Posts" shortly after it updates itself, there will be minimal (if any) "new posts" yet to see.

THANKS ED, for the good word AND all your work keeping us all (well, mostly) IN THE GREEN!! :good: :clapping:

View new posts is a query not an update. If you click on View new posts it will show you what is new since the last time you logged in. Logout (close your browser, your browser times out the session, whatever your combination of OS and browser does to make the forum believe you've logged out) and the 'marker' gets reset. So now log in (which will happen automatically when you open up the forum again if you've ticked off "Log me on automatically each visit" in the login screen) and click on View new posts and you'll only see new posts (and replies) since you last logged out... :dizzy:

To the best of my knowledge this functionality has not changed at all.

The "View active topics" is what is currently broken. :this:

I use View New Posts exclusively and it has been working fine all along for me.

Well there 'ya have it...can't argue with DA MAN, can we?? :fright:   After reading that thru a few times, it almost even makes sense...?

'New posts' has just always acted sorta like I tried to describe it, (without benefit of any actual clue until now) I guess because I seldom intentionally "log out". (why?) But if this expletive computer does that by itself when it's not on...?? (and how am I supposed to know what the damned thing does when it isn't on...IT ISN'T ON, THEN??? the there's another expletive POS usually pretty much refuses to tell me what it's doing when it IS on?!!) :rob:

I miss 'active topics' because (for whatever reason) that list seemed to keep better track (in one place, instead of having to check each individual forum) of posts which I've looked at but can't answer/comment to immediately. With 'new topics' sometimes they're there when I get back...sometimes not... :Phil:

are y'all starting to get the idea of why I so enjoy relays and thumbwheels and camswitches, but have nearly NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to ever be burdened with y'alls hi-tech modern "menu screens" and "software versions" and all that [poopoo] that (maybe) works (if I'm lucky) until it suddenly doesn't, (generally for no discernable reason at all) and then there's NOTHING that can be done to it but throw it out and start over...??? :rob: :Poof: Don't EVEN get me started  about y'all's so-called "smart phones"... :nono: :Poof: :hammer:

BUT ANYWAYS....enough of all that and THANKS AGAIN ED!!! :clapping: :clapping:
