Somebody Shot our Sign!

Postby khardy on Wed Jul 24, 2013 8:59 pm

Hiya Folks,

Last month we picked up a couple of 2'x2' button reflector highway signs at the junk lot. Have started to clean and fix some of our signs and catch up on a few other projects before our next trip in August.

Didn't take any photos of removing the molding. Cleaned the sign board with Dawn soap and water then applied phosphoric acid to remove rust and other stains from the white paint. Dowsed with soap and water. Popped all the round reflectors from numbers and molding, cleaned and painted all numbers and molding.

While removing the molding and numbers on the US 59 sign, I noticed a hole along the upper edge of the number "5". After removing the number, I found the remnants of a bullet slug wedged between the number and sign board.

Hole or dent on upper left, slug on right and hole through number on lower left.

Slug laying back in dented hole.

Number "5" painted and re-riveted with slug back in hole.

Just thought this was interesting.

Cheers!

:2Cool: :2Cool: :2Cool:

Gotta admit a certain strange fondness for the occasional bullet hole in something...awesome that yours caught the slug and held onto it for who-knowshowmany years?!! :good:

NOT TO MENTION that you 'preserved' it, while otherwise restoring the sign?!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Hi Tim,

Have to agree with you about the strange fascination of bullet holes in something especially if it is old. Thought it was cool the slug was still in place and figured since there is a big dent and hole in the sign, may as well keep the slug in it. Besides, makes the sign a little unique and one I will always remember.

Cheers!

We picked those up over a month ago. Just getting around to cleaning a couple of them up.

The 2'x2' US 90 sign was completed yesterday afternoon. Didn't find any bullet slugs in this one....

We have a bunch more signs to go through. Some of the US highway signs are 3'x3' and need a lot of the molding holding the reflectors straightened before reassembly.

Cheers!

Hiya Folks,

Here is another button reflector sign restored and put back together. Had this sign cleaned up but not reassembled before our last road trip. This is a 3'x3' sign.

The molding on this one was pretty messed up and took some time to straighten. This will be mounted on the railing across from the back door on the porch.

Two more highway signs to go but will have to wait till I find more reflector buttons for one of them.

Cheers!
