Flashing Walk Signal?

Postby traffo101 on Sat Oct 06, 2012 10:17 pm

Although the signal is gone now, I figured it was worth a shot to ask what this was all about...

There was a pedestrian signal in Wexford, PA at the corner of Richard/Reichold and Route 19 in which "WALK" would flash while on. Every other walk signal I have seen has been steady except this one. It flashed to about the same time as the "DON'T WALK" indicator did.

The signal in question was a T-Con and was installed around 1990. Some of the other T-Con installations nearby may have done the same but I had never seen folks cross at those. The signals were taken down a few years ago when construction began on the road.

A few years ago it was done away with by the "MUTCD".

Flashing WALK = Concurrent Ped with conflicting vehicals.

Solid WALK = Exclusive Ped or No conflicting vehical movements.

But since no one could understand the different meanings, It is now Just solid WALK,
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Yes, this was indeed a walk where the traffic would also be moving. Makes sense now although I don't remember any of the other intersections nearby having this.

Yep, this was an MUTCD requirement that came and went in the 80s or 90s I believe. There are still a handful of intersections in the Southeastern part of PA that have flashing walk indications.

There's still a couple of intersections in my city that still have the flashing walk signal. They were holdovers from the 90's and the newer intersections don't have them, but the controller still have the settings for them.

I think all the newest NEMA controllers EXCEPT Naztec 980 will let you program a flashing walk. THe PEEK 3KE controller manual describes it as "No longer common in the United States", but it is still existant in SE PA and is very common in Washington DC

Only on older intersections that haven't been upgraded in 20 years. It's no longer actively installed that way.

Yeah, the 980 won't let you do it, but oddly enough the MC682 (which says it is supposed to be the same as a 980 software wise) will let you program it.

They were quite common in the Denver area in the 1970's. This is ran from an off the street CH PCE controller from a south suburb (Greenwood Village)

I like it and I even had Sean dupe this on some homemade pc controllers :good:
