Bridge Markers - Diagonal Lines

Postby traffo101 on Tue Sep 10, 2013 11:36 pm

On many small bridges around here (Pittsburgh), there are signs on the bridge itself indicating where it is. These are used to point out where the column itself to begin the bridge sits.

These signs are usually golden yellow and black with a pattern of repeating, alternating stripes. However, there used to be some with white and black stripes. Today, I know of only one surviving black and white stripe sign.

When did these change over and, more importantly, are there any white and black ones left out there?

I very rarely see black and white delineator markers. Do you have a picture of it? I have seen them before but I can't think right off hand where I have seen them. I know one of the places I saw them was when I went with my dad to the Hocking Hills area. One of the older bridges we crossed on a back road had white and black delineator markers, but I couldnt begin to remember where that was.

I sometimes wondered what those were used for at overpasses. That's interesting to know, actually.

Though I know very little about these markers, I do know some that are, to my knowledge, still in existence. On Staten Island in New York, just before the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expwy. (N.Y. 440) ends at Victory Boulevard, the expressway meets with the Staten Island Expressway, and the overpass there has them.

If you continue past that last exit, just before the end, a second overpass for the Staten Island Expressway as well has them there.

These markers probably date back to when the expressway first opened to traffic in 1964.

Here they call them Hazard or Object Markers.
Usually 12" x 36" with 4 stripes , were White with Red stripes until 1980+/-, then switched to White with Black stripes, Yellow with Black stripes started around 1984 +/-, now is High Intensity Yellow , which started around 2011.

To add to that geekery, I believe they are yellow and black because they're technically a warning sign, not a regulatory (black and white) sign. Red and white is only to be used for stop signs.

Also, object markers are interesting because the direction of the slant is supposed to indicate to the driver on which side they should pass. Basically, the driver is to pass on whichever side that points downward. This is supposedly true in construction zones as well for those type II barricades (the little fold up ones) or the bollard things that have the orange and white striping -- they are all supposed to be laid out (and around here, typically are) such that the driving side is the side where the stripe points downward.

Yellow and black are for the left side on a divided highway.

White and black are for the right side of the road.....

The lines need to point down toward the pavement..
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I've never seen white/black used in modern installations, maybe that's an NYSDOT thing? Everywhere else I've seen yellow/black on both sides of the road, with the stripes pointing down toward the side you're supposed to pass on.

I can't believe we're still posting in this forum!
