Don't Walk is Back!!! (From Baltimore, hon!)

This is the new member sandbox. Until you post a little something about yourself here, you don't get to play on the rest of the board. So tell us a little something about yourself and your signals.

Sorry to hear about the erosion of Baltimore's signal history. :( Has anyone tried intervening and saving some of these old Baltimore units from the scrapper?

Welcome back Chris! also I second Ed's question concerning the whereabouts of these fine pieces of city history....

Hi Ed and Dee,

Unfortunately the City of Baltimore does not have much in the way of any real history-minded people that have stepped forward to try and save some of these signals. Once they are taken down, they vanish. We have no idea where they end up (its like they are aliens or something - whisked away to Area 54!!). Luckily a few of them occasionally show up in antique shops. My good friend Carl M. has a B-More Eagle 4-way in his collection, and my friend Kevin M. also has a B-More Eagle 4-way.

BTW - Dee - love your photo album! What an impressive collection...
If I see you at the next light, for both of us I hope it's green because while I have more than seventy thousand of those red and green eyes in this city alone, the green are the ones that I and millions of other drivers love most

I hope we can all meet there one day this summer, 2010. As you see by the year we only have 2 left.
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Phil!

I could not agree more. Lets try to set something up for the early spring perhaps.

Yes it's true - Don't Walk is going to be a Daddy

Postby Don't Walk on Wed Dec 09, 2009 7:09 pm

Okay so the cat's out of the bag!! :-) Yes, Don't Walk is going to be a daddy. I think that our baby will enjoy the soft tone of a cycling CH Art-deco (with soft 15 watt bulbs) during feeding time!! (Ay, Francis!!). Yes, my wife is 3 months pregnant and we are extremely excited (I'm scared out of my mind!) but it is a truly happy and joyous time for us. Since I'm basically a big kid myself I'm really looking forward to having someone else to play on the floor with...literally (I just set up my model streetcar village under my tree, completely with a 4-way traffic light that I bought last year that is part of the Snow Village series - very cool looking signal. It doesn't cycle but actually stays lit with red in one directoin, green in another (better than those silly traffic lights that blink to red/green!). :clapping: :clapping:

Hi Charles,

Good to be here and thanks for the nice welcome! Unfortunately, no, all of the Walk/Waits were removed when they upgraded to LED (they didn't make an LED walk/wait - wouldn't that be kinda cool?). There were still about 20 of them left before 2005, amazingly, all of these dated back to the late 1950's. Best stuff we have is three GE roundbodies they totally missed, about 10 Eagle 4-ways (all with LED's in RYG), and lots and lots of mid-1950's finned marbs, early 1960's CH heads, Francis' favorite Marbelites from the late 60's, as well as several finned CH Art-Decos. Sadly, the one remaining CH 4-way was removed when they upgraded to LED.

Good to see ya here! Yes, Baltimore is one unique city in numerous ways, particularly signal-wise. Are there by chance any of the old WAIT WALK "ashtray" lens pedestrian signals in service anywhere? It would be fabulous to see any photos of those!!! Happy Thanksgiving.
