Yeah you can put a snubber to try and protect from a blown/short but it's not always reliable. You can also put on big TRIACS well over the rating (40A TRIAC for a 100W bulb) but things happen sometimes.

Generally they are quite reliable...otherwise you'd see people calling electricians every time the bulb blew in any of the dimmable lights in their house.
