First Generation 8" Durasig

Postby LarryC39 on Sat Sep 21, 2013 11:07 am

Came across some scrap recently, these were used as part of an 12-8-8 assembly. Unfortunately the 12" was a heavy-as-a-4way CH Type-M section so when stacked in a pile these guys fared no chance.

Looks like a normal Durasig

Note the poor quality/mixing of the plastic. The fading should be even colors. Since it's swirled like that either it wasn't mixed well or the flow into the mold was poor.

Standard poly lense, these in good shape considering the rest of the signal.

Doors are held on with split pins, bent, instead of the later "allen key" shaped pieces. These are a lot easier to pull out and such. I wonder how many came loose in service.

This fella got quite the sunburn. He must have been hanging in the shadow of someone else.

The wingbolts are quite...unusual. Appear to be studs, cut down in the center so they become captive screws, and then the wing nut is attached and welded in place.

The bosses that the brass nuts press into are lousy. Each signal had at least one brass nut broken away and attached to the wingbolt on the door.

The Gasket-Lens-Reflector assembly. Not a bad idea, considering. I like the added touch of a reflector on the socket insert.

That looks like a VERY early first generation.

The socket and reflector are the earlier style for the door mount with a recess for the lamp and different socket. The later first gens had a socket similar to the ped signals that looked like a machine gear, and the recess was removed from the reflector.

Since it has wingbolts I'd say it was immediately after the "prototype" head that didn't have the word DURASIG on it.

It also looks like they were still experimenting with injection molding. The first ones were not injection molded...at least not in the way the others were.

Think the one I had probably dates to the same era. I remember it having the reflector on the socket...
