Archivists, What happened around 1954-55 to push for the need of a 12" signal? It seems around 1956 both Crouse and Eagle introduced their 12" signal heads, as well as Eagle's 12" adapter. Friendly competition, or something more sinister (muhahahaha)

More high-speed traffic was the reason for them. As soon as one maker sold them successfuly, the rest naturally followed.

Sir Marbelot's explanation certainly sounds most plausible. Although in 1954 there was an addendum to the 1948 MUTCD, but I don't have access to the 1954 addendum, just the 1948 MUTCD (thanks to Lary Brown for whom I'm scanning in his MUTCD collection). But in the signal appendix of the 1948 MUTCD they do mention in general terms how traffic signal systems must be designed with the future in mind. I *guess* this could have been alluding to Francis' observation that advances in automotive technology was providing a steady increase in road speeds (and decrease in reaction time) every year.

BTW, I think the forum software is acting up as Larry's original post didn't come up in my usual 'view new posts' search.
