Mystery Corning Lens Found In My Ruleta

Postby Magnetboy on Tue May 17, 2011 9:21 am

So I made it to OSM 2011 and I was finally able to take ownership of my :aruleta:  I waited for a long time to get it (and so did Randy) but I sure wasn't disappointed. The Ruleta had 2 "nippled" blank lens covers which I previously knew about and I was very excited to finally get to see them. The surprise that Randy didn't tell me about was an interesting lens that neither Randy, myself, nor anyone else at OSM had seen before. The lens is a small bead design made by Corning. The beads are smaller than CH small bead smiley beads. Embossed on the back of the lens is Corning Type H. A comparison photo is below with the CH small bead smiley on the left and the Corning lens on the right. Much to my amazement, the :aruleta: still had all 8 of these lenses in it, INTACT. I am almost 100% certain that these are original to the signal especially since all 8 are present and it is clearly obvious to me that they have not been removed for a long long time. Does anyone here know anything at all about these lenses?

Here are some better pics of the lenses found in my :aruleta: I know some of you must know something about these lenses. Can anyone tell me anything about them as far as their origin, what signal companies they were made for, etc.?

Can't say I can add any knowledge about the lenses, but I can say I have one! I have a red Corning Type H that I pulled out of my Eaglelux years ago, I don't believe it was original as the light also had a yellow flag lens that I believe to be original. The only problem with it is it has BB damage. The rim says:

"CORNING REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. MADE IN U.S.A. 8 3/8 D. TYPE H. TRAFFIC PAT. RE. 14.521"

The 3 in 3/8 is backwards and raised up for the fraction, and the 5 near the end is also raised up.

Exact same lens. MIne has the same embossing with the same details you provided about yours. Any pics?

Did you happen to see 41 in any of the other reflectors, not changing subjects but if it is a date it would date the lenses

I have not examined all of the reflectors yet. I removed one last night and washed it so I could take pictures for another thread. I will let you know what I find out.
