Robert Moses and the Modern City The Transformation of NY

Postby Buttoncopy on Fri Dec 11, 2009 7:10 pm

Guys

I have had this book for about six months now and must say it is awesome.

This is a better companion to the PBS series NY in some ways than the book they sell with the DVD set.

Gives an in depth study of Robert Moses and puts him mostly in a positive light unlike the Caro Book Power Broker.

Has sections on Urban Renewal, City Planning, the Auto Age and other Projects such as pools and playgrounds that Moses created.

I would say a must have just for the illustrations of the proposed unbuilt expressways.

Thanks Tony. The wife was just asking what I wanted for Christmas. Though I don't know how receptive I can be to a book that tries to paint Moses in a positive light.

Glad you are interested.

I can't wait till you guys get it so we can discuss it.

Chapter on the unbuilt lower manhattan Expressway is excellent as well as chapter on the built Cross Bronx.

Didn't get a chance to pick up "Robert Moses and the Modern City - The Transformation of NY" yet, but I did get "The Power Broker" today (had it on order at the library). Wow!! Almost 1200 pages! Is this worth the read Tony?

Believe it or not I have never read this I only know about it from the PBS NY special.

I was quoting from the book jacket in my previous post.

I will have to put it on the list!

I have read Robert Moses Builder for Democracy by Cleveland Rodgers and found it dry as all hell.

He also has a book he wrote himself but it is hard to get a hold of it turns up on e-bay from time to time. It has the words public servant in the title I believe.

Let me know how it goes!

Thanks for keeping this post going. I was intending to buy this book after reading this post last month, but I forgot.

Just got my confirmation from Amazon, so it should arrive in a week or so!
