The Benjamin Franklin Bridge Images of America

Postby Buttoncopy on Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:44 pm

Here is the overview of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge Book.

I never realized it was once the longest Suspension Span in the world back in '26 when it opened.

There is a cool section of the book that shows Elevated railroad stations built into the anchorages but never used. I scanned the photos of that section below.

The first scan is of an invitation to the opening from my collection.

The book has a B&W scan of a copy of the same with the guest's name blanked out. Mine once belonged to Rev crane you can google him on the net.

I have a book from B&N for the bridges of NY city. I will have to put it upanother day.

Thanks for sharing all of this Tony! I can look at this stuff all day, in fact I might have to go to the library in order to do that.

...The added steel of the main span caused the towers to bend 18 inches toward the center of the river." Newspapers noted this "bending," which required bridge engineers to explain that the towers were performing as intended; the bending was within the 20-inch design tolerance for the towers.

Of course today, if a bridge did that even when it was supposed to and people realized it, the bridge would be promptly closed and have C4 strapped to it.
