Then there were nine

EM, NEMA, whatever - if it controls a traffic signal, you can talk about it here.

Stopped by to see the crew changing the EF cabinet at N 26th & Stevens today. Got there at 9:30AM and was too late to get an action shot of the new cabinet hanging from the boom. The new one was powered up and running. While standing there congratulating the crew on the fast work, I noticed that N 30th was flashing. Tech found the the lights were flickering. Turned out to be a loose contact on the jones plug.

The heat from the arcing will also affect the controller wiring.

As luck would have it, this is scheduled for a cabinet swap tomorrow, so I opted for a baling wire fix. Ran a wire from the controller buss, through a gap in the door to the L8 terminal (just below the blue flasher) on the panel.

Probably could have picked a better color but that was what was on the truck. A team effort at jury rigging. This cabinet was installed 9/22/71.

I'm going to have to get one of those preempt timers set up some day, I really want to have a preempt for all of my signals so I can pull a fire switch and have all the intersections go to all red...just have to figure out how to get it working in my EF-20 master and CH controllers...

We have police direct traffic while the signal is being switched. Less than an hour if all goes well.

I don't know that it is even up for sale, but I don't need another controller.

Your crew is fast, I guess you build and program the cabinet at the shop and all you have to do is hook it up once you get it to the job.

It's hard to see in the picture, are there 18 or 19 cams/circuits in the EF-20??

19 signal circuits plus the toggle and interval cams.

Yes, that's right. We do the same for an 8 phase "P" cabinet. Before the police arrive, I adjust min green times and ped recalls, lift all the push button and loop wires, lift the communication cable, then pull the ped loadswitches and lift the ped wires. All that's left is the vehicle wires and service.

Unbolt the cabinet while it's running and slip a couple of 4X4s under each side so that it sits above the conduits and anchor bolts. When the police take control, lift/tape the service, lift the vehicle wires and remove the cabinet. The new cabinet sits on the blocks that protect the wires while they all get hooked up. With the service and vehicle heads connected, we're back on. 20 minutes on a good day.

I think it's easier to set up a replacement cabinet, and do a swap then it is to mess with a lot of wiring modifications in the field. Our NEMA panels are designed to be able to fold them down to work on the back of the panel but it's just as easy to swap it out and work on it in the shop.

What do you normally do with the retired electro-mechanical signal controllers?
