Traffic Circles in Vail

Postby khardy on Sat Aug 10, 2013 8:28 am

Howdy Folks,

We arrived in Vail, Colorado yesterday afternoon and seems a good bit of the traffic is routed and regulated using signage and traffic circles. We drove around the nearby area to Avon and Edwards and I think we went through more roundabouts than I saw in Great Britain in the early 90s. These ski areas tout their "PC" version of going Green and I guess eliminating some of the traffic lights is one way to go.

Just my observations.

Wait, I've heard of showing up early but the snow dosn't fall until October there. You'll definatly be the 1st on the slopps :Wink2:
Interesting find, they just installed a circle in the next town over about 3 months ago here in NJ. I was told they're eliminating circles in the US for safety reasons but that was years ago. I must have been misinformed :Phil:

But some features are added to our roads specifically because they are bad for traffic. They call it "traffic calming". In my city, they quietly eliminated one such traffic circle after a nasty traffic fatality. I guess that particular motorist got a bit "calmer" than our city fathers intended. ;)

They've added a lot of them over the last couple of years around here. I think the jury's still out on their effectiveness, I personally don't mind them since I dealt with them both in Europe and Thailand. The funny thing is that in some places the traffic coming into the circle has the right-of-way and in others the traffic in the circle has it. Go figure....
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!

Here's the local take:

A few years back the city council started a grant program that gave each neighborhood a pot of money and a menu to spend it on. Sidewalks, tree planting, traffic circles etc., were on the list.

..Wait, what?!  Reading this:
“When drivers approach the circles they should yield to vehicles on the right as they should at all uncontrolled intersections. If there is a vehicle already proceeding around the circle, there should not be room to try to turn in front of it because the roadway is single wide.”

Yield to traffic on the *right*? So they're saying people IN the roundabout have to yield to people IN the roundabout?! No matter how you explain it, that makes no sense.

What? If you're in the roundabout, traffic on the right is those entering the roundabout. You yield to them.

I can't stand roundabouts, I'll drive out of my way to avoid them.
Multi-lane rounabouts = :panic:
To make things more confusing we have one here that has Hawk crosswalk signals at each entry :panic:

No,
People ENTERING the roundabout yield to people already IN the circle.

If it was your way, then the circle would get full, and noone would be able to exit.
