Different board style available

Postby EdT. on Mon Feb 25, 2008 11:16 pm

Howdy all. I've added a new board style to STF but am still testing it out and setting it up. It's called the 'glacier' style and you can test it out by going to 'Board Preferences' in your User Control Panel (http://forums.signaltraffic.com/ucp.php?i=165) and selecting 'Glacier' from 'My Board Style'.

Aside from the aesthetics, there are some functional changes (such as the menu across the top) that will hopefully increase user satisfaction. So go ahead and check it out. If you don't like it, you can always change back to the old one. For now (and the foreseeable future) I'm 'forcing' everyone onto the same style. Just makes it easier to maintain. LMK if this is an issue for you.

I've still got a bit of work to do on it, so please bear with me (and the funky blue coloring). Do let me know your thoughts (good or bad).

Cheers,
Ed T.

Okay, after a brief (but thorough) run through, I believe this style (combination of graphics, colors, buttons and menus) is ready for prime time. I still want to change some things around (primarily the color scheme), but there are numerous advantages to it that everyone can benefit from right now.

SO..., in case you haven't noticed, I've changed it to be the default style.

Please do let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

Yup, from the Wayne State Digital Collection. Lots of great stuff over there. Just in an infuriatingly small size (and cumbersome interface). I recently did an exhaustive search (okay, I was already a bit tired to begin with) of their collection and found some really interesting stuff. Will most likely post them tonight. If you just can't wait, do a search on 'traffic' in their 'Virtual Motor City Project'. :)

The one thing I miss is the higher-contrast of the old menu/submenu icons that were a blue if old topics and red if new. Hollow arrow/Black arrow just don't have the same catch to me.

PS I found this thread hard to reply to. Depending on the click-path to get to it I may or may not have a reply button. IE clicking my way through the administrative forum would NOT let me see the reply button for this thread. Clicking the topic from other sections would.

I agree, the whole arrow thing is a bit confusing without having access to a legend of what's what. Unfortunately, that's not something that's easily changed right now. :(

While I really like the overall changes (background image, banner image, menu links, etc..) I'm still not 100% happy. I think the look is still a bit too modern/webby looking and I'd like to change some other things as well, but for now this will have to do. The only other option would be to go back to the original look (an option if everyone's unhappy with this one).

As for the posting of replies thing - actually, you're not SUPPOSED to be able to post anything in this forum as it's the Administrative Forum. :o It's an error with the phpbb3 software and I'll be reporting it.

I really am liking the new design, but I'm starting to realize one big caveat...

With the old design, I could poke my head in occasionally while still sort of looking "busy" at work. This new design is no where near as subtle, and I can't be as stealthy about visiting this site. I don't know if this effects anyone else, but just some food for thought...

Well, I'm working on getting it setup so that everyone can choose their own individual styles (so Ryan, you'd be able to choose a more sedate style such as the original, Randy would be able to select a Hello Kitty style, etc..). That may happen tonight or a week from now. :? But I will let you know when it's ready.
