If Canadian or American signals came in 18" or greater, that would be better for motorists.

There's safetey to bear in mind, and then there is a blot on the streetscape with no extra added value. If a 6 or 7 inch largr lense than average cuts down the number of red light violations then it's worth it from a safetey aspect, however if it doesn't then it's pointless.

Did we see a number decrase in traffic violations from 8" compared with the introduction of 12" optics?

Function vs. Form.

Yes, it might be an eyesore for some, but they will be much easier to see. Especially those who cannot see very well.

Wow, I somehow missed this thread until now.

Here's the Google translation link for the first one (the others don't translate well into Google):

Great stuff.

Dennis - I can definitely see that form of signal becoming the norm in a couple of years.

Will all due respect to those who can't see very well, I really think if you struggle to see something LED bright and 12" x 2 (2 signals) (with tertiary lanterns, and even perhaps quatenary lanterns) you shouldn't be driving.

Does making them easier to see decrease violations?

I think most, if not all red light violations against 12" signals are done so with all intention, and very rareley are they genuinley because of misinterprated or missed signal indications.

Brilliant! :good: Ah now then, Denmark has simalar signals in place which are 8" and look fantastic.

The only downside to this kind of signal is the reliability with using full array LEDs, the lamp monitoring facilities, and other bits and bobs, pureley because a CLS LED module could not be accepted.

I'm awaiting the arrival of OLED into the world of traffic control, and then we can have true CLS LED displays, paper thin. Then again, how long has it taken LEDs to take off in the UK, and they are still a rare ocurrance in some areas
