Controller assistance

EM, NEMA, whatever - if it controls a traffic signal, you can talk about it here.

Controller assistance

Postby StevenRosenow on Tue Nov 25, 2008 2:43 am

Anyone who's been a member of Signalfan's Club on MSN might remember a "shocking" fiasco I had when trying to set up a NEMA controller years ago.

I'm in the market now for another controller and I'm seeking assistance as to what the best one would be. Looking primarily for a complete setup with NEMA backpanel, loadswitches, conflict monitor and loop detection.

Advice is recommended. :)

Currently I have an old 1988 Transyt 1880E 2 ring controller running my cabinet. I think they are easy to use and very durable. The only thing that could kill a transyt would basically be a direct lightning strike.

I also had an EPAC300 that was also very user friendly, but I prefer the older 80s no menu driven controllers. Im a little old school

I am older school than that. To me, it ain't a traffic signal controller unless you can see sparks and hear gears turn. I have had my fill of microprocessors, thank you.

Steven, you can hardly throw that out there without expanding a bit on it! SO tell us, was an EMS team involved or are we talking a more sedate release of the magic smoke?

Nope. But that pik makes me remember the Eagle Moduvacs. They used gas tube timers and multiple step switches. The dual ring versions could sound like a room full of pinball machines! We did get the occasional noise complaint from citizens when we put them too near homes.

Vaughn,
I may have one tucked away somewhere, do you have a picture of one of the Moduvacs?

I really want to see one of these Moduvacs...I've heard about them from Vaughn before, they sound pretty beastly, like a souped-up version of the old Automatic Signal/LFE controller I had that I traded off.

I have some Moduvac manuals at home, but if I were any farther away from home right now I would be out in the Pacific Ocean somewhere. In fact, out in the Pacific is exactly where we plan to be in a very few days. Perhaps I can bring back some pix of south American signal installations.

I remain constantly amazed at how unknown Eagle Muduvacs are to collectors. My whole city used to run on the damn things, and I guess I just assumed that the rest of the world was the same.

Since that guy is listening to a CH controller, what would it be, an SV-110?
I'm so old I remember when the word "mother" only had one meaning!!!
