New York Rises - Photographs by Eugene de Salignac - $27 at Amazon

A large-ish picture book that also supplies a lot of history. The photographs are sharp and clear and very engaging.

While dealing primarily with Manhattan bridges (The Brooklyn, Williamsburg, Manhattan and Queensboro bridges), the book does touch upon some other areas of interest as well (that is, if you're interested in early 20th century NYC). But for me, the bridges alone are worth the purchase price.

Pick up this book if you're at all interested in seeing the following:
- what happens when an Elevated BMT train derails and plummets onto the Manhattan traffic below
- the effects of the 1920 boat fire that almost brought the Williamsburg bridge down
- countermeasures used to cut down on runaway horse deaths (averaging about 3 a month) on the Williamsburg
- The "signal tower" (more of a warning sign - see below) on the Manhattan Bridge
And many more related photos.

It lists for $40 but in quick search I found several copies on eBay for less than $30, but the cheapest price was at Amazon (linked above).

OR even better, put the cash towards your next signal purchase and check it out of your local library.

I will just have to photocopy it at the library.
Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

Just got my copy yesterday!

The book is well worth the money. The photos are spectacular.

There are pictures of historic accidents, Bridge construction: Williamsburg and Queensborough and plenty of shots of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The text aboout the photographer Eugene de Salugnac is fairly interesting also!

Also I just picked up the Destruction of Penn Station.

I had the first edition of this in my hands at B&N back in 2001 but didn't buy it then and had been looking for it ever since. When I ordered New York Rises it popped up during checkout so I got it also.

This book also features dramatic photography mainly of the dismantling of the station as well as several photos showing traffic signals minus the yellow and a few Ruletas.

Glad to hear you like it Tony. Is this the Destruction of Penn Station you're referring to?:

Would you guys stop already! I picked up the New York Rises now I have to pick up the Penn Station book? ARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH

The destruction of Penn is probably one of the biggest architectural mistakes in New York history. The structure that once existed there was probably one of the finest buildings to have existed.

Guess I'll book mark this one and wait until my birthday. <sigh>

EdT Randy

Thats the book.

I think the original edition had heavier pages because my copy seems lighter and thinner than the first copy I saw in 2000 but the inside is as I remember.

I never saw the original penn station

I have been to Union Station and 30th Street Station and can only Imagine how great Penn Station must have been.

It's tragic that short sighted idiots destroyed this monument to Railroading and Architecture.

Every time I think about it :argh:

Still at least this photographic record exists for it.

Wow Penn station looked like a really nice work of art. When was it built and destroyed?

The original Penn was a fabulous work of architechture that suffered at the hands of greed. Built in 1910 and demolished in 1963 to allow for the construction of the building (read eyesore) that is MSG (Madison Square Garden).

After it was destroyed, many New Yorkers realized what a huge mistake that was and it this ignited a drive to preserve historical landmarks not just in New York but across the country and eventually the Landmarks Preservation Act came into being. This eventually saved the Grand Central Station from a similar fate in the 70's
