8-36 screws and other oddball stuff

Postby agaessco on Sun May 22, 2011 4:42 pm

I determined that at least one novalux uses 1/2" round head slotted steel zinc plated 8-36 screws, primarily for the lens clips but also the same thread on the screws surrounding the reflector. I searched all over Denver and the internet but couldn't find that thread in combination with a round head/slotted. The local Fastenal store provided me with this link: www.fastenermart.com The later GEs use a brass 10-32 for the same application but it is much easier to find. It appears that Fastener Mart - online orders only - also carries other odd ball stuff that might come in handy for older signals.
If I can ever finish the restoration, it's going to look more like it used to than it ever did.

That is an odd ball. A quick look at McMaster Carr didn't turn up anything.

Fastenal, where I get most of my stuff, had a few things they could order in 8-36, but nothing even close to the original head. It took the local guy 2 weeks to find the Fastener Mart through a Fastenal vendor and that company didn't show up in any of my google searches.

FYI the GE Halvorson used 10-30 thread. GE just loved the oddball standards.

Thanks but that's an 8-32 panhead tap and what's needed is an 8-36 round head machine screw.

Like the novalux wing nuts and wing nut eye screws are 1/4-24, while the American "standard" for 1/4 is either a 20 coarse or 28 fine thread. I'll refrain from opining on whether GE's quirkiness and now ownership of NBC has anything to do with NBC ratings. ;)

Did you find a source for that realllly long bolt that holds the socket to the reflector arms?

Mine were good, so I haven't looked for those. Fastener Mart does carry the 8-36 x 3/4 that go in that same collar; the ones with the hex nut on them. The reason for my replacing the 8-36 x 1/2 lens clip screws is some of the head slots had been buggered up.
