I'm not a big fan of this decision, as I'm more used to the doghouse-style set-up. Hopefully they don't replace the three section TCT signals at the intersection of Bailey Cove Rd., Cecil Ashburn Dr., Four Mile Post Rd., and Carl T. Jones Dr. when they replace the TCT doghouse traffic lights there.

Why not just have doghouses flash their yellow arrow with the standard green ball? It might look odd, but it makes sense to me.

Well this is the reason that they are going in. Nothing is uniform. You are used to your doghouse green ball but here in Michigan we rarely used that. Instead we used a flashing red ball. Other states used other sequences.

Whether you like or absolutely hate the flashing yellow arrows theyre here to stay. Im not a fan of them either but thats because I can see how much better people from here handle flashing red left that us Michiganders were used to for 25 years. But out of towners were often confused by a blinking red while the other signals were green. So i can see for some uniformity. I have said it before and will say it again. The flashing yellow lefts would work better with a uniform sequence. The motoring public needs uniformity in the sequence to smoothly enter and exit the intersection. Not leading, then lagging, then omitted, etc. Thats all well and good in the engineers head until its places in the field and causes an increase in collisions and erratic movements.

The yellow arrow on a doghouse (or a regular yellow arrow in the middle section of a 3 light head) will not work because the flashing yellow arrow is a green output at the controller level. The solid yellow is a yellow output at the controller. Plus a change of position for the yellows aids in the function
