The two photos I posted were a set of clear-lens GE RX11s on top (a shameless Flickr grab) and the bottom shows a previous generation of tinted-lens Dialights shot by yours truly here in Portland. The Triana Boulevard and Memorial Parkway pictures both have tinted red lens LEDs, incandescent yellows and since the greens are on, I can't tell but I'd assume they're clear. Your last photo has a tinted yellow ball (I think) and a clear green arrow.

The average person probably couldn't tell the difference between a tinted lens LED and an incandescent lens if you put a gun to their head so there is an art to identifying the difference and that's learned through glorious nerdy practice. Basically if you can tell what color the LEDs are with the light off, the lenses are tinted. If they appear silvery-gray and you can't tell what color they should be when off, the lens is clear and this is due to the fact that the individual diodes themselves are not colored but instead, glow a particular color when energized so the tinted lens is more decorative than anything else. They certainly aren't necessary. LED units can be easily identified over incandescent signals by their 'snap' instant on (better seen at night) and differing green color whereas incandescent bulbs fade out relatively gradually and the green is not quite as blue.

Preference is for tinted. Just looks more normal. That said, a lot of the green LED modules in signals in the Seattle area are clear lensed.

The greens look similar to the reds, so I'll say that they're tinted LEDs.
I am a railfan, signalfan, and I'm interested in tornado sirens. I hope to learn new things about traffic lights because I'm interested in them and don't know much about them.

Well what do you know. If I put my name here, I do not have to sign it everytime.

I think maybe you are making it harder than it is. If the LED is tinted, the plastic lens will be the same color when the unit is off as it is when it is on. If the LED is not tinted (clear), the lens is clear looking...no color...when the unit is off.

Have you seen the new IL6 modules? I'm so impressed I ordered a set for my 8" Econolite short groove, lenses tinted of course. ;)

That being said, I still love the original Dialight incandescent-look.

when Georgia first took the pixilated to incandescent look plunge, we evaluated tinted vs clear. Either is an option here in the state spec. We prefer clear so as to get away from sun phantom issues that I have witnessed with tinted and that have been reported by other jurisdictions.

Referring to the old Leoteks, with the exposed led's and little refracting lenses, haven't seen any new ones here :hello:

I prefer all tinted because it looks more like the incandescent lenses.
