New guy here, out in left field...

Postby coyttl on Mon Feb 21, 2011 9:08 am

I haven't seen this mentioned after doing a search, so pardon if it HAS been brought up and shot-down. Or maybe I just can't see that particular forum..

But -
After reading many folk's recent posts, I'm surprised there isn't a "Projects" forum. Another automotive forum (Mini Coopers) I visit has one, and the rule is that if you're working on a project for the car, you post there - however, ONLY the original poster (the one who's project the post is about) can post and provide updates to it.

For example, if Joe, Fred, Nick, Steve, Bob, or whomever is going to be restoring some 4-Way they've never had before, keep us updated on the progress - start a thread in the Project forum. I, for example, know next to nothing about any of this, and am attempting to get a cabinet set up for railroad preemption. I will run into hurdles along the way, and will ask those questions in the appropriate forum.

It also gives a good look back for people to see what 'projects' others have worked on, and whether someone else has done a project similar to yours before.

The downside - and I saw a thread about this somewhere, people not liking this - is that rather old threads would be randomly popping back up to the top as folks update their project status notes and such.

Eh, just a thought.

I think that the Signal Restoration section actually covers that topic pretty well but we could examine the idea of fine tuning that forum. If the poster wants to keep the sections specifically for his comments alone I'm sure we could all respect that as well. Thanks for the suggestion and we always appreciate more. :good:
Moderately inspirational message.

Mike, I like this idea. We'll take a look at this for the next round of modifications to the forum.

Thanks for your input.

That is a really good idea, that way we don't have restorations/projects scattered in the Restoration and Photo sections, sometimes two threads for one project.

I like this idea too. However, I also like the idea of members being able to comment or ask questions about the projects too. I would not want to limit the threads to just the poster.

Maybe we could consider 2 subheadings of the Signal Restoration forum into a Projects section and a Restoration section which would address actual restoration techniques, tips and products?

On the other hand, how do we deal with this when it comes to someone restoring a parking meter, road sign, fire hydrant, fire or police call box, etc.? Some of that stuff has its own category and then we have to ask are we going to split all of these individual forums up? I say no.
:MB:

What's with all the quotes in everyone's signatures?

No offense meant! I don't know anyone's names yet, nor their .. er.. driving idiosyncrasies. ..I just pulled names out of the air that I remember seeing as I scanned threads. :)

Don't worry that's just a running joke we have.

John- I do agree with you there, most of the car forums I look at have a projects section like you describe. Open to all to post on the threads (unless one gets 150% derailed, then the mods lock it until the OP has an update. Shouldn't be a problem here.)
